This study was conducted to determine egg yield performance and quality, animal partiality to poultry meal, and consumer preferences for eggs produced by various feeding methods. A total of 72 Nick Brown laying hens, aged 22 weeks, were offered three feeding methods with 24 replicates per treatment and one hen per experimental unit. These methods consisted of i) vegetarian (no poultry meal), ii) omnivorous (5% poultry meal), and iii) a choice between vegetarian and omnivorous. Feed and water were provided ad libitum. The study lasted for 10 weeks. Feeding methods did not affect feed intake, feed conversion ratio, egg yield, and egg quality. However, they affected the malondialdehyde (MDA) value of eggs on the 42nd day of storage significantly (P <0.05). The highest MDA value was obtained from the eggs of ‘omnivorous’ hens. More hens (51.4%) in the choice group preferred omnivorous feed to ‘vegetarian’. Panellists found organoleptic differences among sample eggs from hens subjected to various feeding methods. They reported that the eggs obtained from vegetarian hens were preferable. The conclusions were that i) no feeding method changed egg yield performance and quality, ii) omnivorous feeding shortened the shelf-life of eggs, iii) hens with a choice of feed did not reject the omnivorous diet, but increased their intake, and iv) the panellists disliked eggs from the omnivorous hens. Finally, these preferences should be considered in legislation for poultry feeding and animal husbandry.

Local chicken has several potential functions in Indonesia, especially as an alternative source of food. Over the last decade, local chicken farms have been growing rapidly to supply the increasing demand of local chicken meat. The government continues to disseminate and spread high-quality local chicken breeds, including KUB Chicken. This study aims to analyse the spatial distribution of day-old local chicken (DOC) as part of dissemination program in Bogor Regency, West Java, Indonesia. The method of this study was descriptive with field observation to collect primary data. Secondary data was used as comparison. The amount of DOC was calculated from three years dissemination program (2018, 2019 and 2020). The results showed 80,120 DOC were distributed to 204 farmers groups in 35 subdistricts in Bogor in the last three years. Cibungbulang Subdistrict has received the most DOC and Cisarua Subdistrict has received the least the DOC with the number of 8,846 DOC and 352 DOC, respectively. This study shows that the spatial distribution of DOC was not spread equally. This study suggests the enhancement of distribution of DOC, especially to the subdistricts in central part of Bogor and has a low population of local chicken.

Farm profitability is the key driver of most livestock enterprises. The productivity and profitability are driven by genetic potential of the animals and the ability to express the superiority in the production environment. In an ideal situation, an animal should produce maximally as dictated by the genetic potential. It is noteworthy that the environment in which an animal lives in impacts on its ability to expose its genetic potential. Studies have shown that it is rarely feasible to provide animals with ideal conditions to express their full genetic potential. The environment in which animals are reared is characterised by many factors that interact in ways that result in different performance even in animals of similar genetic makeup. For instance, thermal environment is critical in poultry production as it affects both the production and reproduction in different ways. The thermal environment affects chicken differently depending on the stage of growth or production phase. This environment has been impacted by the climate change and subsequent increase in climatic variability resulting in thermal challenges in naturally produced chicken thus altering production and reproduction. This implies that there is need to consider thermal resource in the routine poultry management practices. This would result to design of poultry production systems responsive to the thermal environments more so in the light of climate change and the subsequent increase in climatic variability. This chapter explores the impact of heat stress on chicken production, reproduction, health and its dietary amelioration.
