Effects of poly(ethylene oxide) and ZnO nanoparticles on the morphology, tensile and thermal properties of cellulose acetate nanocomposite fibrous film

Abstract: A bio-based fibrous film intended to be used as a food-packaging component was electrospun from blend solutions of cellulose acetate (CA) in neat acetic acid and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in 90% ethanol. The CA/PEO blend ratios were varied to determine the effects of PEO on the morphology, moisture-adsorption and tensile properties of the blended fibrous films. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) incorporated (2-20 wt% of PEO) into the blended fibers were tested for their effect on tensile and thermal properti… Show more

“…In order to know the rheological behavior and, thus, to determine the viscosity of the solutions, shear stress versus shear rate curves were obtained for eight solutions, at a fixed 15% (w/v) polymeric mass concentration in ethanol/water (80/20, v/v), with 0%, 2%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 42%, 82%, and 100% PEO in the zein/PEO blend. All solutions showed pseudoplastic, non‐Newtonian behavior, as observed for most polymeric solutions, in which the viscosity decreases with increasing shear rate 37–39 …”

“…These nanofibers can mimic the dimensions, structure, and function of native extracellular matrix (ECM) constituents [5]. Moreover, the electrospun nanofibers have large surface area to volume ratio, which attached ligands [6], growth factors [7], and other biomolecules [8] onto fiber surfaces. Then, these factors locally modulate cell and tissue function and lastly enhance tissue regeneration [9,10].…”
