Purpose. small-sided games (ssG) with floaters are frequently adopted during the training process of soccer players. However, no study has previously investigated how the rules imposed to these additional players impact the physical, tactical, and physiological responses of the regular players. this study aimed to analyse the influence of the number of floaters on players' tactical behaviour, physical demands, and physiological responses in soccer ssGs and to compare these variables between players with different positional statuses. Methods. Overall, 32 U-13 (n = 16) and U-14 (n = 16) players participated in this study, performing four 4-minute 3 vs. 3 ssGs in both 1-floater and 2-floater formats. the frequency of core tactical principles, time-motion variables, and heart rate were used to describe the game multifactorial phenomenon. Results. results showed an increased number of tactical actions of delays, defensive coverage, and width and length without ball actions in the 2-floater ssG without differences in physical demands or physiological response. Midfielders presented higher frequencies of penetration and offensive coverage, and lower frequencies of actions of width and length without the ball. there were also higher physical and physiological responses in midfielders. Conclusions. In conclusion, the 2-floater 3 vs. 3 format may be an important pedagogical strategy to promote a higher ball circulation pattern during ssGs. Midfielders are the most demanded players tactically, physically, and physiologically in 3 vs. 3 ssGs with floaters.

Match Running Performance in Young Soccer Players: A Systematic Review

Background To date, athletic performance has been extensively assessed in youth soccer players through laboratory and field testing. Only recently has running performance via time-motion analysis been assessed during match play. Match running data are often useful in a practical context to aid game understanding and decision making regarding training content and prescriptions. A plethora of previous reviews have collated and appraised the literature on time-motion analysis in professional senior players, but none have solely examined youth players. Objective The aim of the present systematic review was to provide a critical appraisal and summary of the original research articles that have evaluated match running performance in young male soccer players. Methods Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) statement, literature searches were performed in four databases: PubMed, ISI Web of Science, SPORTDiscus and SciELO. We used the following descriptors: soccer, football, young, youth, junior, physical performance, running performance, match running performance, movement patterns, time-motion analysis, distances covered, activity profile, work rate, match analysis, and match performance. Articles were included only if they were original articles written in the English language, studied populations of male children and/or adolescents (aged ≤ 20 years), were published/ahead of print on or before 31 December 2017 and showed at least one outcome measure regarding match running performance, such as total distance covered, peak game speed or indicators of activities performed at established speed thresholds. Results A total of 5801 records were found. After duplicates were removed and exclusion and inclusion criteria applied, 50 articles were included (n = 2615 participants). Their outcome measures were extracted and findings were synthesized. The majority of the reviewed papers covered the European continent (62%) and used global positioning systems (GPS) (64%). Measurement error of the tools used to obtain position data and running metrics was systematically overlooked among the studies. The main aims of studies were to examine differences across playing positions (20%), age groups (26%) and match halves (36%). Consistent findings pointed to the existence of positional role and age effects on match running output (using fixed running speed thresholds), but there was no clear consensus about reductions in activity over the course of match play. Congested schedules negatively affected players' running performance. While over 32% of all studies assessed the relationships between match running performance and physical capacity, biochemical markers and body composition, ~ 70% of these did not account for playing position. Purpose. The study examined the influence of scoring mode (line goal, double goal, and central goal) and age group (U13 and U15) on passing actions performed by youth soccer players during 4v4 small-sided and conditioned games (SSCG). Methods. In 6 independent sessions, participants performed the 3 SSCGs, each lasting 10 min, in a total of 60 min per game condition. Overall, 4052 passes were notated post-event with the Lince software. The analysis included 3 game-related dependent variables: passing volume, passing zones, and passing direction. Mixed factorial ANOVA and multinomial logistic regression were applied to evaluate the effects of scoring mode and age group on dependent variables. Results. A greater passing volume was found in line goal (vs. central goal), while the U15 group performed significantly more passing actions than the U13 group. Logistic regression models revealed the following significant main effects of scoring mode and age: (1) double goal (vs. central goal) increased the odds of performing passing actions in defensive lateral zones; (2) line goal (vs. central goal) increased the passing flow in defensive midfield and offensive midfield sectors and decreased the odds of executing forward passes; (3) U13 teams were more likely than U15 to execute passing actions in more advanced pitch zones and less likely to pass sideways. Conclusions. The manipulation of scoring mode in SSCGs influenced the quantity, location, and dominant direction of passing actions to achieve specific task solutions. The findings provide soccer coaches with relevant information for the selection of representative tasks and optimization of task design in youth soccer practice.
