Effects of Physical Exercise on Cognitive Functioning and Wellbeing: Biological and Psychological Benefits

Abstract: Much evidence shows that physical exercise (PE) is a strong gene modulator that induces structural and functional changes in the brain, determining enormous benefit on both cognitive functioning and wellbeing. PE is also a protective factor for neurodegeneration. However, it is unclear if such protection is granted through modifications to the biological mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration or through better compensation against attacks. This concise review addresses the biological and psychological positiv… Show more

“…Benefits to nervous system function, including learning and memory enhancement, are documented outcomes of mammalian exercise [45][46][47][48]. We therefore tested whether long-term exercise improves associative neuronal functions in adult C. elegans.…”

“…Numerous studies in animal models and humans show that exercise can improve cognitive function and reduce the risk of developing dementia later in life [45][46][47][48]. However, the effect of exercise on dementia patients is not clear, with outcomes of published studies ranging from detrimental to beneficial effects of exercise [61][62][63][64][65].…”

“…In contrast, healthy activity and exercise patterns confer many benefits, as they may reduce mortality, health care expenditures, and risks of cardiovascular disease, stroke, depression, and multiple cancers . Exercise improves fat and lean mass, alleviates metabolic syndrome, promotes cognitive function, and prevents neurological decline . Although it is clearly vital to optimize exercise and activity across the ages, public health practitioners struggle to promote healthy behaviors in society as a whole.…”
