Effects of physical activity on the P300 component in elderly people: a systematic review

Abstract: The effects of physical activity on brain function can be assessed through event-related potentials (P300) that reflect cortical activities related to cognitive functions. P300 latency represents the information processing time; longer latencies represent slower processing. P300 amplitude is associated with the attentional system and working memory, with higher amplitudes representing more preserved functions. This systematic review summarizes the literature concerning the effects of physical activity and exer… Show more

“…Yet, despite these promising results, few large-scale studies with sufficient sample sizes have examined the effects of PA interventions on hippocampal volume in older adults, leading to ambiguity about the longterm effects (75). Other studies have reported positive effects on other brain biomarkers of morphology and function (71,77,78), while others are more equivocal (72).…”

“…Together with or in absence of perfusion changes, altered cortical activation patterns may be triggered by RE. In both, younger adults and individuals with mild cognitive impairment, increased P3 amplitudes (linked to activity and cognitive functioning) were detected immediately following an exercise bout [ 45 , 46 ]. Finally, exercise generally modulates the production of cortisol and moderately elevated concentrations of the stress hormone can enhance working memory [ 47 ].…”

“…W wielu badaniach wykazano korzystny wpływ regularnych ćwiczeń zarówno aerobowych, jak i siłowych na sprawność poznawczą osób starszych. Ponadto zaobserwowano wyższą amplitudę 2 składowych potencjału P300 -potencjałów P300a i P300b -w grupie osób aktywnych fizycznie w porównaniu z osobami nieaktywnymi fizycznie [31].…”
