Effects of phenytoin injection on vocal cord healing after mechanical trauma: An experimental study

Abstract: Background/aim: Phenytoin is an anticonvulsant drug which causes fibroblast proliferation, collagen synthesis, and an increase in epidermal growth factor. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to evaluate the effect of phenytoin injection on the wound healing process in rats with vocal cord injury by histopathological methods. Materials and methods: The vocal cords of 10 albino Wistar rats were damaged bilaterally; the left vocal cord was kept as the control group. Phenytoin was injected in the right voca… Show more

“…[33] In a study by Tokgöz et al, they found an increase in the amount of collagen in the phenytoin group. [34] Similarly, in their wound healing study, Turan et al observed a notable and importantly extance in collagen accumulation within the phenytoin-treated group. [35] In our study, consistent with the literature, we believe that phenytoin increased collagen in the study group and this increased the burst pressure by strengthening the staple line.…”

“…Fibroblasts are known to be very important in the process to complete epithelization of damaged tissue by secreting growth factors, cytokines, collagens, and extracellular matrix components. [ 15 ] In a study by Tokgöz et al[ 15 ] investigating the effect of phenytoin on the vocal cord in rats, it was shown that phenytoin significantly increased fibroblast density in histological examination. Similarly, Turan et al[ 16 ] were investigated an increase of fibroblasts in wound healing area.…”

“…It has been reported that the effect of phenytoin on collagen is by decreasing the collagenase activity and supporting the distribution of collagen. [ 4 , 13 ] In the study of Tokgöz et al[ 15 ] on the vocal cord, there was an increase in collagen as well as in fibroblasts. In an in vivo wound healing studies, it was observed that there was a significant increase in collagen accumulation in the phenytoin group by Turan et al In our study, there is an increase in collagen deposition between 1 st and 9 th day control groups.…”
