Effects of pentoxifylline duringSchistosoma mansoniinfection in Swiss mice: an analysis of worm burden, fecundity and liver histopathology

Abstract: The short-term effects of pentoxifylline (PTX) on granulomatous lesions during Schistosoma mansoni infection in Swiss mice were evaluated. Drug administration was initiated 42 and 140 days post-infection (DPI) for the acute and chronic infection groups, respectively. Treatment was carried out daily with 200 mg/kg (subcutaneous route) of the drug for five consecutive days. Recovery of parasites and tissues was performed at 49 DPI and 147 DPI, respectively. Liver histological analysis showed a decrease in the in… Show more

“…These observations were also reported by Utzinger et al [61], Suleiman et al [57] and Mati et al [39]. They found, the reduction in the worm recovery and egg density in treated mice was considered as a strong indication of the effectiveness of anti-Schistosoma drugs.…”

“…The reduction in the worm recovery and egg density in treated mice was considered by several authors as a strong evidence of the efficiency of antischistosomal drugs (Utzinger et al 2002;Suleiman et al 2004;Mati et al 2010). The death of the worms due to treatment with antischistosomal drugs was attributed to metabolic disorders, mechanical destruction and muscular contraction of the treated worms (Andrews 1985;Harder et al 1987).…”

“…Without doubt, major alterations arising out of PTX administration in rodents continue to be those observed previously in the liver (Reis et al, 2001;Xiong et al, 2003;El-Lakkany & Nosseir, 2007;Mati et al, 2010;Rabia et al, 2010). The liver is the organ where the immunological modulation process and its respective alterations on schistosomotic granulomata are more evident (Andrade & Warren, 1964;Carvalho et al, 1986;Silva et al, 2000;Tristão et al, 2000).…”

“…Additionally, in order to verify the number of eggs per female parasite in a day, the ratio of second-stage S. mansoni eggs per g intestine/number of female parasites recovered from the portal system was utilized (Pacheco et al, 2005(Pacheco et al, , 2008Mati et al, 2010). Female worms from the peritoneal cavity were not used in the analysis of the rates their eggs, laid in the peritoneum, produce free granulomata in situ that do not normally reach the intestine.…”
