AIm: Aim of this study is to assess effects of parenteral nutritional support with fish-oil emulsion on spinal cord recovery in rats with traumatic spinal cord injury. mAterIAl and methOds: For 5 days after SCI rats were received saline in group C and Omegaven in group O. Locomotor strengths (BBB scale)of animals were rated at Day 0,7,14,21,28, and 35. At Day 35 spinal cord sampling was evaluated immunohistochemically.results: BBB scores were 0 in early period after SCI was inflicted in both groups. BBB scores were progressively increased after Day 7 in both groups (p<.005). BBB scores were significantly higher in group O when compared with control group after Day7 in all times (p<.005). Neuronal injury (p<.002) and edema was much more in control group when compared with in group O (p<.005). Scores for white mater cavitation, demyelinization and vessel in growth were similar in both groups. VEGF expression in control group was higher (p=.019).COnClusIOn: At the early period of SCI fish-oil emulsion treatment in rats, its anti-inflammatory effects leaded to decrease in edema and had positive effect at the prevention of neuronal injury. Otuzbeşinci günde omurilikte histopatolojik inceleme yapıldı.BulGulAr: Kontrol grubunda BBB skorları düşük (p<.005), nöronal hasarlanma (p<.002) ve ödem (p<.005) yüksek bulundu. Beyaz maddede kavitasyon, demiyelinizasyon ve damarlanma skorlarında fark saptanmadı. VEGF kontrol grubunda yüksek bulundu(p=.019).sOnuÇ: Erken dönemde omurilik hasarında balık yağı emulsiyonu ile beslenme desteğinin antiinflamatuar etki ile ödemi azalttığı ve nöronal hasar üzerine koruyucu etkisi olduğu görüldü. Omurilik yaralanması olan hastalarda balık yağı emulsiyonu ile beslenme desteği daha iyi klinik sonuçlar ve daha yüksek yaşam kalitesi sağlayabilir.

Black Sea molluscs and gastropods are the most studied organisms from the Romanian littoral zone. In particular, those from the Mytilidae species are of great interest because biochemical investigations have shown that they can be sources of biological active substances which can have different applications (e.g. food additives). We report here the extraction of lipids from two different species of molluscs (Mytilus galloprovincialis L., Mediterranean mussel) and gastropods (Rapana venosa, hard-shell clam). The extracts were evaluated in terms of antioxidant and composition properties and their healing properties were tested on skin burns in Wistar rats. Our studies proved that the two lipid extracts contained a relatively complex distribution of compounds, in terms of characteristic indices, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and vitamins E and D. The presence of such compounds rendered the extracts very efficient in healing induced skin burns in Wistar rats. The histological analysis showed a reduction in the time of healing (12-13 and 13-15 days for the Mytilus galloprovincialis (L.) Rapana venosa extracts, respectively) compared to 20-22 for untreated animals, based on results from tissues and blood samples. Our investigations have been proved to be promising in terms of future potential applications of the extracts as skin-care products, cosmetics and/or pharmaceutical preparations owing to their dermorestitutive properties.

The paper describes preparation and biological characterization of the solid hybrid biomaterial that was designed for cell-targeted lipid delivery in healing tissues. The material referred to as 'solid emulsion gel' combines a protein-stabilized lipid emulsion and a hydrogel structure in a single compartment. The potential of the omega-3 (n-3)-fatty acids rich solid emulsion gel for tissue repair applications was investigated at the macro-, micro-, molecular and gene expression levels, using human fibroblasts and endothelial cells and a porcine model of full-thickness wounds. Being non-cytotoxic in vitro and in vivo, the biomaterial was found to affect cell metabolism, modulate expression of certain genes, stimulate early angiogenesis and promote wound repair in vivo. The neovascular response in vivo was correlated with upregulated expression of the genes involved in lipid transport (e.g. adipophilin), anti-apoptosis (e.g. heat shock proteins, haem oxygenase 1) and angiogenesis (vascular endothelial growth factor, placental growth factor). Collectively, the results of this study provide first evidence that the angiogenic response provided by solid emulsion gel-mediated delivery of n-3 fatty acids is an alternative to the topical administration of exogenous growth factors or gene therapy, and can be advantageously used for the stimulation of tissue repair in complex wounds.
