PurposeThe purpose of this research is to explore how knowledge source and knowledge recipient influence knowledge transfer performance through political skill and partnership quality, and in so doing to make up for the lack of research on the political skills of knowledge sources in the process of knowledge transfer.Design/methodology/approachThis research used paired-sample questionnaires to conduct a survey. One direct supervisor was paired with 1–4 subordinates; 224 other-reported questionnaires were sent out to supervisors and 896 self-reported questionnaires to subordinates. A total of 171 valid supervisor questionnaires and 511 valid subordinate questionnaires were collected. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to analyze the data.FindingsThis empirical research demonstrated that knowledge sources with political skills can promote partnership quality and influence the success of knowledge transfer.Research limitations/implicationsThis study was a cross-sectional design. Therefore, in our future research, self-report and non-self-report data will be collected in the process of questionnaire administration, and a multi-group questionnaire method (time/field isolation method) will be adopted to avoid having the same source of data. Supervisors and employees will be divided into different groups to collect sources, and the results from two different sources will be used to reduce the negative impact of common method variance.Practical implicationsExternal knowledge sources with political skills can impact recipient' knowledge transfer performance in the workplace, which means that external knowledge sources can provide the organization with innovative ideas and implementation skills.Originality/valueThe study presents a valid model that comprises the antecedents (characteristics of the source of knowledge), mediators (partnership quality), moderators (political skill) and consequences of knowledge transfer performance of firms.

Assessing the impact of knowledge management on total factor productivity

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of knowledge management (KM) on the total factor productivity (TFP) at the organizational level in Egypt. Design/methodology/approach Using the novel available EC 2013 data set, which includes approximately 60,000 private organizations in Egypt, the paper explores the relationship between KM and TFP. For the purpose of dealing with endogeneity, the two-stage least squares econometric model has been implemented. Findings The study reveals that KM impacts positively the TFP of the Egyptian organizations. Conspicuously, each 10 percent increase in KM is associated with 9.3 percent increase in TFP. Originality/value The role of KM in the organizations has been under-researched globally, especially in Africa. This study contributes to the current literature by assessing the impact of KM on TFP, which represents the most comprehensive measure of the firm productivity; by implementing a novel instrumental variable in order to deal with endogeneity between KM and TFP; and by generating a more nuanced measure for the knowledge intensity that is not based on any financial indicator as in the most of the previous studies. Original findings can be highlighted from the paper as it demonstrates that the impact of KM is more important than proposed by the current literature. Conspicuously, the KM does not merely impact the customer satisfaction, the quality improvement and the profit margin, but it also impacts the TFP of the organizations.

There are two important aspects that usually influence the organizational competitive advantage, i.e. organizational capabilities and organizational change. This study aimed to frame the role of organizational capabilities and organizational change based on exploration and exploitation in the form of balancing and ambidexterity toward organizational competitive advantage, and justify that the organizational capabilities and organizational change are becoming important in organizational competitiveness, and those are becoming more effective if there are complementary relationships between exploration and exploitation. For this purpose, a systematic thematic approach is applied by collecting, synthesizing, reviewing, and understanding previous related scientific articles. Sustainable competitive advantage of firms may lay in the firm's ability to simultaneously balancing exploration and exploitation. Organizations that focus exclusively either on exploration or exploitation, as well as neither on exploration nor exploitation, may become obsolete. Balancing both exploitation and exploration activities creates an ambidextrous organization and allows this organization to be creative and adaptable at the same time, and it can drive organizational capabilities and organizational change in generating the realization of superior competitive organizations.
