Effects of organic polymer addition in magnetite synthesis on the crystalline structure

Abstract: Various polymers with different functional groups and surface charges were added to the precursor solution of Fe3O4 to clarify the relationship between the chemical structure of the organic substances and the crystal structure of Fe3O4.

“…They used poly-(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDAC), poly(sodium-4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS), polyacrylic acid (PAA), and polyethylene glycol (PEG), and reported that the crystalline sizes were in the range of 7.3-14.4 nm. 31 Our experimental results in this study also agree well with their result. However, while MNP was not formed in the presence of PAA in the Kuwahara's study, MNP synthesis was confirmed in our experiment.…”

“…Kuwahara et al examined the effects of the chemical structure of organic substances on the crystalline structure and size of magnetite by adding various polymers to the precursor solution of magnetite. They used poly‐(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDAC), poly(sodium‐4‐styrene sulfonate) (PSS), polyacrylic acid (PAA), and polyethylene glycol (PEG), and reported that the crystalline sizes were in the range of 7.3–14.4 nm 31 . Our experimental results in this study also agree well with their result.…”

“…12 Authors have found that the size and magnetic properties of the Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles vary depending on the functional groups of the added organic molecules added during the aqueous synthesis of Fe 3 O 4 , and that other types of iron hydroxide will form depending on the synthetic conditions. 13,14 However, the effects that the polymer molecular weight and functional groups have on the crystalline phase and the heat generation characteristics of the resulting conjugates have not been comprehensively investigated. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to clarify these points in terms of the molecular weight and the charge of the functional groups of the added polymers.…”
