Effects of Omega-3 Fatty Acids on Depression and Quality of Life in Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients

Abstract: Depression and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) are closely interrelated among hemodialysis (HD) patients and associated with negative impacts on patients' clinical outcomes. Considering previous reports on clinical benefits of omega-3 fatty acids in major depression and HRQoL in other patient populations, this study examined effects of omega-3 fatty acids on depression and HRQoL in chronic HD patients. In this randomized placebo-controlled trial, 40 adult patients with a Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) … Show more

“…A total of 1089 and 1071 subjects were included in the omega-3 PUFAs supplementation group and placebo group, respectively. Analysis was based on the HRSD score in 16 studies 3,4,11,1621,23,24,29,32,33,35,37 , MADRS score in 4 studies (including one unpublished study, Coryell) 25,30,36 , BDI score in 4 studies 22,28,31,34 and other scales (The Geriatric Depression Scale, GDS) in 2 studies 26,27 . Overall, omega-3 PUFAs had significant effects on the improvement of depression (Fig.…”

“…Clinical trials evaluating the effects of marine n-3 PUFA supplementation on QoL in patients on hemodialysis are scarce. One study reported significantly improved QoL after marine n-3 PUFA supplementation for four months compared to placebo (12). In this study, improvement in QoL was mainly driven by better mental health and a corresponding improvement in Beck Depression Score was shown (12).…”
