In this work, we studied the effects of different types of soils contaminated with diesel on the germination and early growth of four plant species (Xanthium strumarium, Avena sativa, Daucus carota, and Cerinthe major). We used four potting soils that we contaminated with different levels of diesel: 2.5%, 5%, and the control (0%). The results showed that the effect of the contamination depends on the species. Thus, compared with the three other species, X. strumarium showed the best results. This species showed good germination rates, with a lower rate of 50%. Its root length and weight were stimulated in the contaminated soils, and its shoot growth was less affected than that of the other species. The results depend also on the soil type. X. strumarium showed the best results in the different types of soils; thus, in soil three, at 5% diesel, all species showed a germination rate of 0%, but X. strumarium showed a rate of 50%. Our study demonstrated the variation in diesel effects across different plant species and soil types. The four species showed different levels of tolerance that varied with diesel concentrations, soil types, and parameters. We recommend performing phytoremediation tests in soils contaminated with petroleum products using preferably X. strumarium, but it would be interesting to test the other species. Additionally, it would be interesting to test the tolerance of this species using seeds extracted from the burs, to investigate the role of the X. strumarium burs in its tolerance to diesel contamination.

The rate of environmental degradation is an increasing trend globally and most especially in many developing nations where it has food production implications. This deterioration in environmental quality is mostly attributed to population growth, urbanization, industrialization, and unsustainable agricultural practices. The Niger Delta region of Nigeria is the oil and gas province of Nigeria. The activities of illegal crude oil refiners, theft, vandalism, etc. are common within the region, thereby leading to the degradation of major biophysical environmental matrices and conditions. Plant and fish-based diets are the major food sources for humans within the Niger Delta region. This review focuses on the implications of artisanal crude oil refining (ACOR) on sustainable food production in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The review found that the activities of artisanal crude oil refiners are harming the vegetation cover, altering the physicochemical and microbial composition of the soil, and releasing hydrocarbons into the environment, which are absorbed by vegetation leading to an increase in human and biodiversity contamination from ACOR as well as loss of arable farmlands, uncontrolled bush burning, and increased cases of soil erosion. Therefore, ACOR activities are having negative effects on food security, which is characterized by food availability, accessibility, stability, and utilization. Hence, there is a need to curtail the activities of ACOR through the issuance of operational liens followed by stricter regulations and monitoring of harmful emissions released during the processes.

The culture of Pseudomonas mendocina H-3 was selected as the microorganism for oil destruction, and its effect on oil-contaminated soil from the Zhanazhol deposit in West Kazakhstan was studied. After conducting model laboratory experiments, field experiments were carried out. Six and twelve months after the treatment of the oil-contaminated field with microorganisms, the amount of oil fractions in the soil decreased noticeably, while the content of asphaltenes remained constant. Analyses show that the composition of the oil fraction changes—the concentration of paraffin-naphthenic—polycycloaromatic components decreases, whereas the relative amount of mono- and bicycloaromatic hydrocarbons increases. The results of the efficiency assessment showed that the use of Pseudomonas mendocina H-3 cell suspension in natural conditions leads to a decrease in the content of hydrocarbons in the soil from 55 to 70%. The lower efficiency of bioremediation with cell cultures in field experiments (on average, 61%) compared with laboratory model studies (reduction of oil content to 79%) is apparently associated with climatic conditions.
