“…Similar to our results, total N in crested wheatgrass, intermediate wheatgrass, bromegrass and Russian wild ryegrass was observed to increase with level of N fertilization (Smith and Lutwick 1975). Average PC, across three Black Chernozemic and a Gray Luvisolic soils, in bromegrass increased from 112 g kg -1 at zero-N check to 144 g kg -1 at the 150 g N kg -1 rate (Malhi et al 1986), and the PC at these N rates in bromegrass was somewhat greater than the PC in both Cut 1 and Cut 2 of quackgrass in the present study. But, unlike DMY, the PC for Cut 2 increased with N rate in 1998 only, and the PCs for Cut 1 and Cut 2 were not consistently different.…”

“…At the corresponding N rates the DMY increased by 77, 107 and 105%; and the PC increased by only 8, 28 and 45%. Malhi et al (1986) and Penney et al (1990) also observed relatively higher response to N fertilizer for the PY compared to the DMY of smooth bromegrass. This was because of the cumulative effect of increase in DMY and PC, which resulted in relatively greater increase in PY in response to N fertilization.…”
