Effects of Moringa oleifera Lam. and Azadirachta indica A. Juss. leaf extract in treatment of tannery effluent

Abstract: The effect of leaf extracts of Moringa oleifera and Azadirachta indica using ethanol as solvent on tannery waste water treatment was investigated for a period of five days and their phytochemical constituents were analyzed. All the extracts were found to be efficient in the clarification and sedimentation of total solids in the tannery waste water sample. On the 5 th day, sample treated with 10 ml of extract showed higher reduction of electrical conductivity, pH, chloride, sulfate along with dissolved oxygen. … Show more

“…Previous studies have also suggested that the use of M. oleifera can alter the values of water physicochemical parameters (Sinha et al . 2016); therefore, its use may influence the optimal values (pH = 8·14–8·31, temperature = 26–32°C, DO ˃ 5 mg l −1 ) for shrimp farming (Han et al . 2018).…”

“…2017), whereas other studies coincide with our findings, which have reported a significant decrease in pH levels in water treated with M. oleifera (Sinha et al . 2016). Although pH values from this study remained within the expected range for shrimp, its monitoring is important because M. oleifera seed has been used as a food supplement in shrimp, showing increased growth and survival (Akbary et al .…”

“…The present study support their conclusion as it exhibit that aqueous extract of Moringa oleifera showed promising results in only one out of three samples with an optimum concentration of 0.3%. According to Ali et al 2010and Sinha et al (2016) as a polyelectrolyte it may therefore be suggested that M. oleifera decreased hardness in water through adsorption and interparticle bridging. Effect of extract of M. oleifera on total dissolved solids: Total dissolved solids (TDS) are a measure of the combined content of all inorganic (chiefly calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, bicarbonates) and organic substances that are dissolved in a liquid in a molecular, ionized or micro-granular suspended form.…”
