Effects of Moisture Content and Burning Period on Concentration of Smoke Particles and Particle-Bound Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from Rubber-Wood Combustion

Abstract: Physical and chemical characteristics of particles from rubber-wood combustion in a natural rubber sheet smoking process were studied. Experimental parameters include wood moisture content and wood-burning period. The size distribution of smoke particles was measured by using an 8-stage Andersen air sampler. Total smoke particle concentration was determined by collecting particles using a modified high volume sampler. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) were extracted with Benzene-Ethanol by using ultrason… Show more

“…In recent years, some scholars proposed coal/MSW co-combustion to solve the above problem (You et al, 2008;Zhu et al, 2008). However, the cocombustion method can not solve all of problems related to MSW treatment, some pollutants such as heavy metals, dioxins and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are formed during MSW incineration process (Tekasakul et al, 2008;Chomanee et al, 2009;Ye et al, 2012).…”

“…Combustion of rubber-wood results in large emissions of PAHs (Furuuchi et al, 2006;Bai et al, 2007;Tekasakul et al, 2008;Chomanee et al, 2009). Hence, measures taken to control or reduce particulate matters emitted from wood combustion is necessary.…”

“…However, several issues are associated with the uses of these technologies for kitchen waste treatment. For example, the unpleasant odors and undesired byproduct formation from combustion and leakage of leachates by landfill possibly due to the high moisture and salt contents in kitchen wastes may limit the applications and efficiencies of these technologies for kitchen waste treatment (Allen et al, 1997;Zou et al, 2003;Popat and Deshusses, 2008;Chomanee et al, 2009;Ning and Sioutas, 2010;Bari et al, 2011;Lo et al, 2011). In addition to incineration and landfill, composting, swine feeding, and bioenergy recycle are the three major technologies used for the recycled kitchen wastes, with public interest in composting has been on the increase in these years (Dimambro et al, 2007;Boldrin et al, 2009;Hecht and Griehl, 2009;Zhang et al, 2010;Latif et al, 2011).…”
