Effects of methionine hydroxyl analog chelated zinc on laying performance, eggshell quality, eggshell mineral deposition, and activities of Zn-containing enzymes in aged laying hens

Abstract: The study aimed to determine the effects of methionine hydroxyl analog chelated zinc (MHA-Zn) on laying performance, eggshell quality and mineral deposits, and the activities of Zn-containing enzymes on aged laying hens. A total of 960 layers (Hy-Line Grey, 57 wk old) were fed a basal diet (Zn: 35.08 mg/kg) without extra zinc for 2 wk. During the ensuing 14 wk, birds were randomly divided into 4 groups according to body weight and laying rate, with 8 replicates per treatment, and each group had 8 replicates of… Show more

“…Zn is necessary for maintenance of structural and functional integrity of biological membranes, facilitation of gene expression and protein synthesis, enzyme structure and function, appetite regulation and good food utilisation (10,11) . Zn is closely linked to eggshell formation (6,12,13) . Especially, Zn plays an important role as a cofactor of carbonic anhydrase (CA) which involves in catalysing hydration of metabolic CO 2 to HCO À 3 and supplying carbonate ions during eggshell formation (4) .…”

“…In this research, organic zinc supplement significantly improved total protein and globulin. Previous studies also proved that dietary Zn supplementation significantly affected serum total protein, albumin, glucose, immunoglobulin, and the performance of laying hens [9,28,29]. Urea nitrogen is a product of protein degradation in the body.…”

“…When broilers suffered coccidiosis vaccination, organic trace mineral complexes supplied in diets improved the immune response and lowered lesion scores [8]. Our team’s previous study also showed that 40 and 80 mg/kg methionine hydroxyl analogue chelated zinc (MHA-Zn) supplement increased eggshell quality and promoted trace element deposit [9,10]. Therefore, significant differences exist between inorganic zinc and organic zinc in the body’s antioxidant capacity, but further study is needed to clarify the different mechanisms.…”

“…From the literature search a total of nine studies were identified. These studies were performed in pigs (Liu et al., 2014), chickens for fattening (Yuan et al., 2011; Zhao et al., 2016), laying hens (Manangi et al., 2015; Min et al., 2018), dairy cows (Nemec et al., 2012), heifers (Whitehurst et al., 2014), fish (Savolainen and Gatlin, 2010) and shrimp (Katya et al., 2016). No adverse effects were reported.…”
