Effects of malnutrition on treatment‐related morbidity and survival of children with cancer in Nicaragua

Abstract: Background: Most children with cancer live in resource-limited countries where malnutrition is often prevalent. We identified the relationship between malnutrition and treatment-related morbidity (TRM), abandonment of therapy, and survival of children with cancer in Nicaragua to better inform targeted nutritional interventions. vs. 5.58 years; P = 0.049), and abandoned therapy more frequently (P = 0.015). Conclusions:In Nicaragua, pediatric oncology patients with malnutrition at diagnosis experienced increased… Show more

“…In some cases, 2–5% of patients died within a few hours of arrival to the hospital before even completing staging evaluation (Moleti et al , ; Gaytan‐Morales et al , ). Extensive abdominal surgical procedures as well as nutritional deficiencies in some settings may also increase the risk of early toxicity, and chemotherapy dose modifications may be necessary in these cases (Israels et al , ; Traore et al , ; Cervio et al , ; Patte et al , ; Pribnow et al , ; Howard et al , ). Delayed diagnosis with advanced disease not only increases the risk of toxic death and excess relapse, but also increases the costs and morbidity of treatment, which in turn increases the rate of abandonment of therapy.…”

“…Nutrition is an indispensable aspect of supportive care in children with cancer. Undernutrition translates into higher morbidity and mortality and an impaired quality of life in patients with cancer . In low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs), undernutrition is prevalent in the general population.…”

Thirty-eight percent and 21% of Indian children under the age of 5 years are stunted and wasted, respectively.…”
