Effects of Helicobacter pylori eradication on serum lipid levels

Abstract: The purpose was to clarify the effects of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication on the changes in serum lipid levels by comparing subjects with and without continuous H. pylori infection. The study subjects were 774 individuals (males 536, females 238, mean age 52.6 years) who visited between April 2013 and March 2016 for annual medical checkups. Serum total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC), and triglyceride levels, and LDLC/HDLC ratio w… Show more

“…Complex pathomechanisms may be involved in the relationship between H. pylori and cortical thinning. Increased metabolic syndrome [43][44][45][46] and vascular disorders [2] due to H. pylori infection were previously suggested [47,48]. Others suggested the chronic in ammation induced by persistent H. pylori infection could produce CRP and proin ammatory cytokines [49] that could directly damage neurons or activate neuroin ammatory cascades leading to Alzheimer's disease [9].…”

“…Indeed, serum lipid metabolism has been demonstrated to be influenced by H. pylori infection ( 4 - 9 ). In addition, the successful eradication of H. pylori infection has been shown to have a favorable effect on lipid metabolism ( 10 - 15 ). The degree of gastric mucosal atrophy is influenced by the duration of H. pylori infection as well as the grade of gastric mucosal inflammation ( 20 ).…”

“…Several investigators have reported that successful eradication of H. pylori favorably affects lipid metabolism ( 10 - 15 ). Our analysis of the changes in the serum lipid level after eradication also showed that the level of LDLC in serum as well as the LDLC/HDLC ratio tended to increase in subjects continuously positive for H. pylori , whereas those values were decreased following eradication.…”

“…Ansari M et al [12] showed increase in Cholesterol/HDL ratio and LDL/HDL ratio in cases compared to controls. Adachi K et al [16] concluded that the LDL/HDL ratio in the H. pylori-positive group was significantly higher than that in the H. pylori-negative group, and successful H. pylori eradication tended to reduce that ratio.…”
