Effects of light availability on morphology, growth and biomass allocation of Fagus sylvatica and Quercus robur seedlings

Abstract: The survival, morphological, and growth responses of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) seedlings to different light intensities, from full sunlight to heavy shade, were studied over two growing seasons in a shadehouse experiment. Although shade treatments significantly affected seedling growth, they did not influence seedling survival. Both growth and biomass increased as light intensity increased. Diameter growth of oak seedlings was higher than that of beech. Beech an… Show more

“…EIVs have previously been related to plant ecophysiological characteristics, such as RGR, seed mass and SLA, among others [see review by Bartelheimer & Poschlod (2016)]. These findings are in correspondence to those reported for relationships between the same plant traits made with actual measurements for soil fertility and light (Metcalfe & Grubb 1995;Grubb & Coomes 1997;Hodkinson et al 1998; Quero et al 2006;Sevillano et al 2016). This evidence supports the use of EIVs as a proxy for actual habitat measures when actual measurements are lacking.…”

“…In contrast, densities of Q. liaotungensis and A. fargesii seedlings decreased significantly with gap size. Previous research suggested that Quercus seedling response to light availability varies among species (Sevillano, Short, Grant, & O'Reilly, ; Truax, Lambert, & Gagnon, ). Nevertheless, most researchers have found positive effects of increased light on Q. liaotungensis seedling establishment.…”

“…For example, oak leaves grown in the sun and shade are readily distinguishable as based on characteristics such as leaf thickness and secondary chemistry (Barber and Marquis , Sevillano et al. ). Assessing which abiotic and biotic factors play a role during the movement and settlement stage will be a promising avenue for future research.…”
