Effects of life review interventions on psychosocial outcomes among older adults: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract: Life review is a worthwhile intervention for reducing depression and hopelessness, and improving quality of life, well-being and specific memory in older adults. More well-designed trials with a large sample and long-term follow up are necessary to confirm the effects of life review on other psychosocial outcomes. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2017; 17: 1344-1357.

“…Without two outliers (Afonso & Bueno, ; Chan et al, ), a moderate effect size was found (Cohen's d = 0.57). This is similar to Pinquart and Forstmeier (; Hedges g = 0.57) and Lan et al (; Cohen's d = 0.57), who included more diverse interventions with a broader focus and target groups. Unlike the earlier meta‐analyses, the heterogeneity was low to moderate and nonsignificant when the two outliers were removed, suggesting that we focused on a more homogeneous subset of interventions.…”

“…The evidence for collaborative care is more conflicting and insufficient to make recommendations. Bibliotherapy and 'life review' (a therapy including the recall, evaluation and integration of life experiences to achieve a positive sense of self in the later stages of life) (Lan et al, 2017) lacked sufficient evidence to make recommendations for this group.…”

“…Evaluation of hospitalizations, social care use, and cost-effectiveness is also vital to assist commissioning decisions, as home-based services are potentially costly but may deliver long-term costsavings in health or social care use. Other nonpharmacological interventions for depression that have shown to be effective in the general older adult populations, such as CBT, behavioral activation, and life review (Gould et al, 2012a;2012b;Lan et al, 2017;Orgeta et al, 2017), may also offer promise, but could be optimized through working with frail older people to understand how these treatments could be better tailored to their needs and abilities. Book-based CBT had low adherence in this population and exercise interventions do not appear to be effective when people have a medical comorbidity (Schuch et al, 2016), so these may be less useful avenues for investigation.…”

“…Acceptance of death of oneself and close individuals might be a new type of separation-individuation (SI) compared with the primary SI between infants and mothers (Mahler 1974), secondary SI of independent adolescents from parents (Blos 1966;Moon and Bahn 2016), and tertiary SI of the elderly due to retirement, letting go of kids, or "intimacy at a distance" (Colarusso 1992). Life review is a worthwhile intervention for reducing depression and hopelessness, and improving quality of life, well-being and specific memory in older adults and also might be one of developmental tasks (Lan et al 2017).…”
