Effects of l-ascorbic acid (C6H8O6: Vit-C) on collagen amino acids: DFT study

Uliana Y. Chugaeva,
Mahmoud Raouf,
Natalia S. Morozova
et al.

Abstract: Vitamin C plays an important role in the amino acid metabolism of athletes, especially the formation of collagen. Collagen is the main constituent of connective tissue that holds bones and muscles together and It is the main and most abundant protein in the body that prevents the weakening of bones, muscles and skin wrinkles. The amino acids present in the structure of collagen include glycine, proline, arginine and hydroxyproline. In this study, the interaction of amino acids glycine and proline in the presen… Show more

“…Supplementation of additional ascorbic acid is needed for robust cd-ECM generation and deposition. Ascorbic acid is a cofactor of lysyl hydroxylase and prolyl hydroxylase that are critical enzymes in collagen fibrillogenesis, and contributes to promoting cell sheet formation by increasing the amount of cd-ECMs [ 154 , 155 ]. Moreover, the addition of macromolecules, such as ficoll, carrageenan, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and dextran sulfate, to the culture system can also be effective in facilitating the formation of cd-ECMs [ 156 , 157 ].…”

“…15 When the skin is exposed to environmental insults, the natural antioxidants present within the cutaneous tissue, such as glutathione, Vitamins E and C (or L-ascorbic acid), can be depleted leading to an altered skin redox homeostasis with consequent damage and premature aging of the skin; application of antioxidant compounds such as Vitamin C can therefore prevent skin damage and collagen degradation. [16][17][18][19] However, the protective effect of L-ascorbic acid when applied on skin, is limited by its incapacity to penetrate the stratum corneum due to its hydrophilic nature. 20 The use of Ferulic acid in the formulation helps to stabilize L-Ascorbic acid by adjusting the pH of the skin and thus favoring its penetration within the cutaneous tissue.…”
