Effects of juniper berry oil on growth performance and blood parameters in common carp (Cyprinus carpio)

Abstract: In this study the effects of commercial juniper berry oil (JBO) as a feed additive in diets for common carp (Cyprinus carpio) was investigated in terms of growth performance, feed utilization and blood parameters. The experimental diets were prepared to contain JBO at rate of 0 (JBO-0), 5 (JBO-5) and 10 (JBO-10) ml/kg. Common carps (3.07 ± 0.15 g) were fed with test diets for a period of 60 days in 40-L aquariums of triplicate groups. The feeding experiment revealed that JBO groups showed significantly better … Show more

“…(1996), who studied the exposure of C. carpio to low temperatures. Our measurements of total protein concentration were also lower than those reported by Kesbiç (2019), who investigated the effects of juniper berry oil. However, the juniper berry oil induced higher cholesterol and lower albumin than what is reported here (Kesbiç, 2019).…”

“…The BPO used in this study was purchased from a local medicinal herb store and diluted with high‐purity ethanol at a ratio of 1/20, and the aromatic components were analysed using Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC‐MS) (Shimadzu GCMS QP 2010 ULTRA). GC‐MS condition was applied according to Kesbiç, (). The ion chromatograms were identified by comparison of the Wiley W9N11 spectra libraries.…”

“…Blood biochemical parameters are significant signs of health condition used to ascertain the effect of feed additives in fish (Acar & Türker, ; Fazio et al, ; Kesbiç, ; Yilmaz, , ; Yılmaz & Ergün, ). In addition, the serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) are important antioxidant enzymes that detoxify oxygen free radicals and hydrogen peroxide, inhibiting oxidative damage (Safari, Hoseinifar, & Kavandi, ; Safari, Hoseinifar, Nejadmoghadam, & Jafar, ; Wen et al, ).…”
