The effects of Ptecticus tenebrifer and Tenebrio molitor (PTM), as alternative fishmeal, on the growth performance, haematological values, biochemical and immune response and gut microbial diversity of Cyprinus carpio L. were investigated. Two hundred and forty hatchery‐reared juvenile C. carpio were divided among four experimental diet groups, formulated with the insect replacements: Control—30% fishmeal; Treatment 1—20% fishmeal + 10% PTM; Treatment 2—10% fishmeal + 20% PTM; Treatment 3—30% PTM. C. carpio fed 30% PTM had the highest final length and the largest increase in length. The red blood cell count was the highest in 10% PTM (0.92 M/µL) and lowest in the control group (0.23 M/µL). Fusobacteria was the dominant gut bacterial phylum, followed by Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Proteobacteria. Cetobacterium somerae was the dominant gut bacterial species, and its relative abundance was significant in the 10% and 30% PTM treatments. The relative abundance of Bacteroides massiliensis was the highest in the control group while there was decline in the treatments with PTM. These results suggest that P. tenebrifer and T. molitor as a fishmeal replacement lower the biochemical oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand in the culture tanks and increase the length and change the gut microbiome of C. carpio.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of essential oil extracted from bergamot (Citrus bergamia) peel on growth performance and health status of European sea bass juveniles (5.10 + 0.05 g). Test diets supplemented with 0.0%, 0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0% bergamot peel oil (BPO0, BPO0.5, BPO1 and BPO2) were fed to experimental fish for 60 days. At the end of the experiment, the best growth performance was obtained in the BPO0.5 and BPO1 groups (p < .05). No significances were found for haematological parameters including red blood cell count, haematocrit and haemoglobin concentration at the end of the feeding experiment. There were significant differences between the total protein, cholesterol, alkaline phosphatase and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (p < .05) between the BPO0.5 and BPO1 supplemented groups and the control group with no BPO addition. The addition of BPO showed significant differences in immune parameters such as lysozyme activity, total myeloperoxidase content, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activity between BPO0 and BPO supplemented groups (p < .05). It might be concluded that dietary addition of 0.5%‐1% BPO could increase the growth performance and feed utilization with improved health status in sea bass juveniles.

The present study investigated the effects of dietary trans‐cinnamic acid (TrCin) on growth performance, biochemical composition, fatty acid composition, blood biochemistry, antioxidant status, digestive enzyme and liver antioxidant gene (EF1α, SOD1, SOD2, CAT, GPX1, GPX4, GR and GST) expression responses of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. Five experimental groups of fish with mean weights of 17.49 ± 0.08 g were used in the study; four of them were fed with TrCin‐supplemented diets (0.25 g/kg TrCin25, 0.50 g/kg TrCin50, 0.75 g/kg TrCin75 and 1.50 g/kg TrCin150), whereas an additive‐free basal diet served as the control (Cntr). At the end of the 60‐day feeding trial, the growth performance, biochemical composition and fatty acid composition were similar for all experimental groups. A decrease was observed in intestinal and stomach pH, serum triglyceride and AST, ALT, LDH and ALP levels in fish fed with especially 0.50 g/kg TrCin‐supplemented diet. Moreover, dietary TrCin especially at 0.50 g/kg incorporation level significantly increased the serum SOD and liver SOD2, CAT, GST, GPX1, GPX4 and GR gene expression responses. As a conclusion, feeding rainbow trout for a period of 60 days with a diet containing 0.50 g/kg TrCin might be sufficiently enough to improve the levels of antioxidant enzymes and health status in fish.
