Effects of Intradermal Sterile Water Injections in Women with Low Back Pain in Labor: A Randomized, Controlled, Clinical Trial

Abstract: Background:In addition to the pain caused byuterine contractions during labour, continuous and severe back pain is observed in 33% of women. Several pharmacological and nonpharmacological methods are available for managing this pain. Sterile water injection is considered as alternative method for nonpharmacological pain management.Aims:To assess the satisfaction level and effectiveness of sterile water injection for back pain among women in labour.Study Design:Randomized controlled trial. Methods:A total of 168… Show more

“…Although there were controversies regarding the use of this method, the participants reported improvement soon after their application. (13,18,29) Such a method usually occurs in protocols with only one or four injections. One RCT compared both cases, and their findings demonstrated that the use of four injections led to a greater sensation of analgesia for patients, but, due to the intense pain during administration, there is still uncertainty if this method would be actually worthy.…”

(29) To investigate the effect of sterile water injections, a study (13) compared the administration of four "dry" syringes (without any contents) to four water-filled syringes. The findings demonstrated that there was a significant decrease in pain intensity in the EG.…”

“…The mean pain scores 30 min after injections were lower in the sterile water injection group (P < 0.01). The need for epidural analgesia, duration of delivery, mode of delivery, and APGAR scores were similar in both groups ( 25 ). Another study showed no difference in the pain reduction percentage between the two groups receiving distilled water by intradermal and subdermal injection methods ( 13 ), which was quite similar to our study results.…”

“…Seven articles (N=7) satisfied the inclusion criteria and were considered in the review: 2 articles treated osteoarthritis of the knee,16,17 and 5 articles treated spine diseases 2 on neck pain,18,19 2 on low back pain,20,21 and 1 on chronic spinal pain 22. The PEDro scores in these studies ranged from 5 to 8 (Table 1).…”

“…Two studies20,21 analyzed the efficacy of mesotherapy in low back pain (LBP). Cui et al21 performed intracutaneous sterile water injection (ISWI) to relieve acute LBP: experimental group patients received the intracutaneous sterile water injection in the lumbosacral region whereas control group received the intracutaneous of isotonic saline.…”
