In centrifugal compressors, Mild Surge (MS) leads to unstable operation. Previous experimental work on a centrifugal compressor designed and built by Safran Helicopter Engines (SafranHE) showed that MS corresponds to the pulsation of an alternate stall pattern at the Helmholtz frequency of the test rig on two channels in the radial diffuser. The present contribution experimentally investigates the impact of the Inlet Guide Vane (IGV) stagger angle on this alternate flow and numerically studies the topology of this pulsating alternate flow. The experimental investigation is performed with unsteady pressure sensors, and shows that the IGV stagger angle only impacts the pulsation frequency of the alternate flow pattern. This change is explained by the dependence of the Helmholtz frequency on the compressor inlet section. The topological analysis of the average flow field, computed from wall-resolved Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) simulations, demonstrates that the saddle point (major critical point) in the corner hub/suction side of the stalled blade migrates upstream while staying in the corner if the mass flow rate decreases. One main blade over two is stalled on both sides because the flow originating from this corner separation circumvents the trailing edge and migrates upstream along the pressure side. In the simulation, the pulsation of the alternate stall is coupled with the reflection of acoustic waves on the inlet and outlet planes, regarded as an environmental effect.

Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) results are used to track flow separation zones in a splittered vaned radial diffuser near the compressor best efficiency at high rotation speed. The topology analysis reveals some closed separations at the corner of the blade and hub or shroud surface. In addition, an open-closed flow separation at the main blade pressure side is observed for the first time. The surface separation has the shape of a sheet at the blade mid-span and the associated separation line is delimited only at its downstream extremity by a trailing edge node. This flow separation process is robust to a small shift in operating condition and the separation surface remains essentially unchanged. A large flow rate variation converts the open-closed separation into a more classic closed separation. The evolution in time of the separation surface is also observed and the authors conclude to the unsteady existence of the open-closed separation.

An LES investigation on turbulent flow in a centrifugal impeller affected by normal-distributed inflow perturbations

The inflow of a rotating centrifugal impeller is normally perturbed by an upstream stationary component; therefore, the development of turbulent flow is different from the case with steady and uniform inflow. In this work, we performed a large-eddy simulation on turbulent flow in a centrifugal impeller, considering perturbation from the inflow and emphasizing the development of perturbation and its influence on flow in the impeller. The inflow perturbation is applied for the streamwise (w-) velocity and is time-varying as generated by a random number generator. A normal-distributed pattern of perturbation is always assumed with the intensity of perturbation, defined as the ratio between the perturbation amplitude and the mean velocity, set as fv = 0%, 5%, 10%, and 20%, where fv denotes the perturbation intensity. The inflow perturbation notably affects the passage flow. The velocity fluctuation and secondary flow increase in intensity as the perturbation intensity increases from fv = 0% to 10%, while a further increase to fv = 20% slightly weakens the velocity fluctuation. Although this phenomenon is less obvious in terms of the time-averaged characteristics of velocity, the Reynolds stress terms CtCa and CrCa under time-averaging still reflect a clear variation trend, and the Reynolds stresses are observed significantly on the blade suction surface.
