Effects of industrial and residential sludge on seed germination and growth parameters of Acacia auriculiformis seedlings

Abstract: A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of sludge (industrial and residential) on seed germination and growth performance of Acacia auriculiformis seedlings at the nursery of Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences, Chittagong University (IFESCU), Bangladesh. Before sowing of the seeds, different combinations of sludge were incorporated with the nutrient-deficient natural forest soils. Seed germination and growth parameters of the seedlings (shoot and root length, collar diameter, fresh and dry … Show more

“…Maximum nodule number (70) was also found in 20 cm × 15 cm size polybag. This is because T4 treatment contains much growing media which supplies more nutrients to the seedlings and the results support the findings of Hossain et al (2009).…”

“…ex Benth.) is an evergreen, exotic, heavily branched, forked bole species, mostly planted on roadsides and railway embankments, parks and gardens because of its ornamental and shade bearer values in Bangladesh (Das and Alam 2001;Hossain et al 2009;Girijashankar 2011;Islam et al 2013). It is a multipurpose tree species and considered as one of the most promising plantation species because of its ability to survive on a wide range of degraded environmental conditions (Alam et al 1991;Das and Alam 2001;Jahan et al 2008).…”

“…At the fifth leaflet, only flattened leaf stalks which were leaves that resembled human ears, thick and greenish in color were produced. These features make this plant adaptable to hot climates and drought [7]. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated significant differences (P<0.05) among soil types and seed pretreatment methods of the Acacia auriculiformis from the different treatment combinations.…”

“…Some degrees or levels of dormancy are naturally associated with its viable seeds which should be pretreated prior to sowing [3,4,5,6]. It is an evergreen tree that is very useful for erosion control and water conservation [7]. It can fix nitrogen after nodulating with a range of rhizobium and brady-rhizobium strains [8].…”

“…Current management options for biosoiids (the treated residual solids from municipal wastewater treatment plants) include landfill disposal, land application as a fertilizer or soil supplement, and incineration (Hossain and Miller, 1994;Hossain, et al, 2009;Sánchez-Monedero et al, 2004;U.S. EPA, 2008aU.S.…”
