Effects of trans‐2‐hexenal on reproduction, growth and behaviour and efficacy against the pinewood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus

Abstract: trans-2-Hexenal had significant nematicidal activity against B. xylophilus, providing a basis for elucidation of the mode of action of trans-2-hexenal against plant-parasitic nematodes in future studies. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.

“…xylophilus with maximum inhibition at 50 µg/mL, although significant declines in nematode survival were noted at 10 and 20 µg/mL (Fig. 1E), which concurs with previous results 20 . Enhanced activity was observed when 5-iodoindole and abamectin were used in combination at 0.05 mM and 10 µg/mL respectively (~11 ± 5% survival) (Fig.…”

“…Eggs were then incubated in M9 buffer (22 mM KH 2 PO 4 , 42 mM Na 2 HPO 4 , 86 mM NaCl, 1 mM MgSO 4 ) in the absence of food, at 25 °C. Two days later, the synchronised larvae were transferred to a Petri dish containing a fresh fungal food source ( B. cinerea ) and the adult nematodes were collected at 78 h. Approximately 500 adult nematodes that were a mixture of females and males were initially treated with the purified active compound (spectinabilin) at 0.21 (LC 10 ) and 0.48 µg mL −1 (LC 30 ) and incubated at 25 °C for 24 h, as described by Cheng et al . Approximately 24 h later, 10 male and female nematodes were picked randomly and placed on a potato dextrose agar plate, fully covered with B. cinerea , and allowed to grow until one of the plates was fully consumed.…”
