“…Rhinoncomimus latipes Korotyaev is a host‐specific Asian weevil that was introduced to the United States in 2004 by the U.S. Forest Service as part of a classical biological control program against mile‐a‐minute weed (Wu et al ; Ding et al ). Weevil feeding damage reduces mile‐a‐minute weed growth and reproduction and decreases its competitive ability (Hough‐Goldstein et al 2008 b , 2009; Guo et al ; Lake et al ). The objectives of this experiment were to evaluate the effect of native plant competition, in combination with pre‐emergent herbicide and in the presence of R. latipes , on mile‐a‐minute weed and the associated plant community.…”

“…This species occurs over a wide geographic range in China (Ding et al 2004). Weevil populations originating in northeastern (Heilongjiang), central (Hubei), and southern (Hunan) provinces were assessed for their impact on P. perfoliata from China and from North America (Guo et al 2011). Weevils from Hunan Province were found to be most effective in reducing biomass and plant height of North American P. perfoliata, and the weevils introduced into North America originated from adults collected in Hunan Province (Hough-Goldstein et al 2009;Guo et al 2011).…”

“…Franks et al 2008). If true for P. perfoliata, this makes it even more likely that an introduced host-specific insect could impact the population of invasive mile-a-minute weed in the U.S. North American populations of mile-a-minute were found to be shorter with lower biomass but higher seed output than Chinese populations and the specialist herbivore Rhinoncomimus latipes Korotyaev (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) had a greater effect on P. perfoliata plants from North America than China (Guo et al 2011).…”
