Effects of Human Colonization on the Abundance and Diversity of Mammals in Eastern Brazilian Amazonia

Abstract: With its long history of colonization, eastern Amazonia has the highest population density in Brazilian Amazonia and represents the typical pattern of recent human occupation. Between 1991 and1995, we surveyed the mammalian fauna at five sites, representing different degrees of human disturbance. We used line transects (1511 km surveyed) to describe differences in diversity and abundance at each site and to evaluate the effects of environmental factors. Twenty-two of the expected 44 species were recorded durin… Show more

“…This community is also more recent and more isolated than the others, which may mean that local game populations may be less impacted than those at other sites, a pattern observed throughout the Neotropics (Lopes & Ferrari 2000, Peres 2000, Jerozolimski & Peres 2003. This also suggests that game may be preferred over fish, in general, and that the prevalence of fish in the diets of the other communities is the result of the relative scarcity of game at these sites.…”

“…Human activities lead to wildlife habitat fragmentation and transformation [41]. Researchers have revealed the abundance of species decreases as human activity increases [42,43]. Species diversity and abundance vary distinctly between different habitats, especially for insects [44].…”

“…Studies of the impacts of hunting pressure on game populations show significant decreases in populations of many species in community forests (Peres 2000, Peres andLake 2003). The effects of hunting are likely to be greater than that of logging (Lopes andFerrari 2000, Peres andLake 2003). As the presence of loggers often increases hunting pressure because of the construction of roads (Wilkie et al 2000), it is important to begin to decouple the effects of hunting and logging.…”
