Effects of Harvest-Aid Herbicides on Soybean (Glycine max) Seed Yield and Quality

Abstract: Experiments were conducted in 1989 and 1990 to investigate the influence of 220 g ai ha–1AC 263,222, 840 g ai ha-4glufosinate, 560 g ai ha–1glyphosate, and 840 g ai ha–1paraquat applied at R5, R6, R7, and R8 soybean growth stages as harvest-aid treatments on soybean seed quality. Soybean yield was severely reduced by all herbicides applied at R5. Only paraquat and glufosinate reduced soybean yield when applied at R6, and none of the herbicides reduced yield when applied at R7 or R8. Paraquat and glufosinate re… Show more

“…Producers often facilitate harvest by applying desiccants or harvest aids to accelerate the rate and uniformity of crop and weed dry down because of indeterminate crop growth and variable field and weather conditions (Hole and Hardwick 1978;Wilson and Smith 2002). In order to minimize herbicide residues in dry bean seed and maintain yield and seed quality it is important that desiccants are applied at the appropriate crop maturity (Azlin and McWhorter 1981;Ratnayake and Shaw 1992;Cessna et al 1994).…”

“…However, glyphosate reduced seed germination and vigour when applied during the seed development of such diverse crops as sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), and soybeans (Glycine max Merr.) (Baur et al 1977;Hampton and Hebblethwaithe 1982;Ratnayake and Shaw 1992). Due to the importance of seed quality to marketing, more data on the effects of preharvest glyphosate on alfalfa seed quality on the Canadian prairies are needed.…”

“…As constatações verificadas assemelham-se aos dados encontrados por Ratnayake & Shaw (1992), que referiram redução na emergência de plântulas normais de Cassia obtusifolia L., quando plantas-mãe foram aspergidas pela imidazolinona AC 263.222, no início do desenvolvimento das sementes. As causas seriam conseqüência da inibição da enzima ALS envolvida na síntese dos aminoácidos valina, leucina e isoleucina (Shaner et al, 1984).…”
