Effects of growth environments and two environmental endocrine disruptors on children with idiopathic precocious puberty

Abstract: Objective: The incidence of idiopathic precocious puberty (IPP) might have an increasing trend. But the causes and risk factors of IPP are unknown. The objective of our study is to evaluate the effects of growth environments and two environmental endocrine disruptors (EDCs), zearalenone (ZEA), and 1,1-dichloro-2,2,bisethylene (p,p 0 -DDE), on patients with IPP. Design: Case-control study. Methods: The study consisted of 78 IPP patients at diagnosis and 100 control children matched for age and sex. A questionna… Show more

“…Wolff et al (2008) do not find any change in timing of breast development in relation to serum DDE levels in girls in New York city (Table 5). Data on the timing of menarche (Table 6) after prepubertal exposure to DDE (DDT) are discrepant since it has been found to be early (Ouyang et al, 2005;Deng et al, 2012) or normal (Denham et al, 2005;Ozen et al, 2012). However, on account of the persistence of the insecticide in the body fluids, exposure earlier than in prepuberty cannot be excluded in these studies.…”

“…Speculations of the origins of such a trend include rapidly changing environmental factors such as chemical exposure [2,4,26] and dietary shifts and a concomitant trend for increased adiposity in children [13].…”
