In the production of gluten-free noodles by using a single screw extruder, cooking is done at two consecutive stages. Initially, the dough of gluten-free formula is steamed manually at certain times and temperatures. During extrusion, the pre-cooked dough is re-cooked inside the extruder barrel. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the properties of gluten-free noodle (color, texture profile) produced from different production batches (batch 1 to 6) of two different single screw extruders (A: capacity 24 kg/hr, B: capacity 12 kg/hr) by using a single factor completely random design. The results showed that steaming process in batch cause intermitten time for extrusion and affected some non-uniform properties of the gluten-free noodles produced by the two extruders. The two extruders produced noodles with distinctive properties. The noodles from extruder A exhibited the hardness (average 26,925.14 ± 2,355.74gf) and adhesiveness (-7.66 ± 6.41 gs). The noodles of extruder B showed the elongation (157.91 ± 39.67%) and cohesiveness (0.91 ± 0.02).

Plastic waste is increasing worldwide, contributing significantly to pollution and global warming. Our department uses at least 50 plastic water bottles daily; these bottles can be reused to manufacture other products. Recycling plastic waste produces various products, including garden sets for kids, bricks, roof tiles, key holders, and flowerpots. Through this project, we contribute to the fight against pollution caused by plastic waste by developing an easy-to-use plastic processing system. We create these valuable products using plastic collected from landfills. We present an open-source system that can be easily built by a technical team to create an ecosystem. We use the project as a mobile educational model to demonstrate the recycling mechanism and to foster a community recycling culture. The following procedures are included in this study. High-density polyethylene bottle caps are washed and dried before shredding in a shredder to produce flakes. Plastic flakes are fed into an extruder, which heats and transforms them into a homogeneous mass. This molten plastic is molded into the shape of a flowerpot using a die. Pots are great products to obtain from discarded plastic caps due to their strength. Following the fabrication of the entire system, numerous tests are performed to improve the design and obtain the desired specifications, resulting in appealing end products. In our facilities, flowerpots are made from consumer bottle caps and used to grow aloe.

Environmental issues resulting from production and application of wood charcoal can be addressed by using biomass briquettes as alternative. This research was undertaken to develop and evaluate briquette from jatropha, groundnut and melon seed residues. Samples of the briquette were formed from mixtures of 0.32-0.39 kg carbonised residues, 0.30-0.40 kg starch and 0.02- 0.04 kg water. Physical and mechanical properties of the briquette samples including calorific value, bulk density and breaking force were determined using standard methods. Box-Bekhen Design Methodology was used to determine the optimum briquette blend. The results showed that the optimal briquette blend gave values of 4711.87 kcal.kg–1 calorific value, 282.59 kg m–3 bulk density and 1.36 kN breaking force, with a desirability index of 61.5%. A comparative analysis of the properties of the optimal briquette with that of a wood charcoal indicates no significant difference (P<0.05). This implies that the briquette can serve as an alternative energy source for cooking in rural communities.
