Effects of formulation composition on the characteristics of mucoadhesive films prepared by hot-melt extrusion technology

Abstract: Objectives To investigate the effects of formulation composition on the physico‐chemical and drug release properties of mucoadhesive buccal films prepared by melt extrusion technology, using a response surface methodology. Methods Salbutamol sulphate, an antiasthmatic drug was used for this study. Klucel hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) EF (film‐forming polymer), Benecel hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) K‐15M (drug release retardant) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) 4500 (plasticiser) were the three independent fa… Show more

“…Presently the most extensively investigated technique for the preparation of buccal film is solvent casting technique [ 186 ] compared to hot-melt extrusion [ 187 ] and emerging 3D inkjet printing [ 188 ] method. Similar to manufacture of oral films, continuous fabrication of buccal film is efficiently adaptable for mechanization.…”

“…Buccal films are the potential formulations for the effective delivery of nutraceuticals due to their versatility and flexibility. Further, these mucoadhesive films can remain in contact with the oral mucosa and provide prolonged release in the direction of the oral mucosa or toward the oral cavity [54]. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) defined three different types for films [55]:…”
