Large-scale forestry operations, like clearcutting, may impair surface water quality if not done with environmental considerations in mind. Catchment and country level estimates of nutrient loads from forestry are generally based on specific export values, i.e., changes in annual exports due to the implemented forestry operations expressed in kg ha -1 . We introduce here a specific concentration approach as a method to estimate the impact of clear-cutting on nutrient concentrations and export in headwater streams. This new method is potentially a more dynamic and flexible tool to estimate nutrient loads caused by forestry, because variation in annual runoff can be taken into account in load assessments. We combined water quality data from eight boreal headwater catchment pairs located in Finland and Sweden, where the effect of clear-cutting on stream water quality has been studied experimentally. Statistically significant specific concentration values could be produced for total nitrogen, nitrate, ammonium, and phosphate. The significant increases in the concentrations of these nutrients occurred between 2 and 6 years after clearcutting. Significant specific concentration values could not be produced for total phosphorus and total organic carbon with the whole dataset, although in some single studies significant increases in their concentrations after clear-cutting were observed. The presented method enables taking into account variation in runoff, temporal dynamics of effects, and the proportional size of the treated area in load calculations. The number of existing studies considering large site-specific variation in responses to clear-cutting is small, and therefore further empirical studies are needed to improve predictive capabilities of the specific concentration values.

Mineralización del nitrógeno, carbono y actividad enzimática del suelo en un bosque de Nothofagus obliqua (Mirb) RESUMENEn Chile, el establecimiento de plantaciones comerciales de rápido crecimiento ha sido sostenido en las últimas décadas mediante la sustitución de bosques nativos y conversión de suelos agrícolas. Pinus radiata D. Don es la principal especie productiva, debido a su crecimiento acelerado y adaptabilidad al clima y los suelos. En el presente estudio se plantea que la actividad biológica del suelo es variable a través del año, en respuesta a variaciones de precipitación, temperatura y contenido de humedad de suelo y que el cambio de uso de suelo desde un bosque templado de Nothofagus obliqua (Mirb) Oerst a una plantación con coníferas exóticas, modifica la química del suelo y consecuentemente los procesos de N-min, C-min y la actividad biológica del suelo. Esta hipótesis fue examinada en un bosque de N. obliqua y una plantación de P. radiata del centro-sur de Chile (40º07' S, 72º O). Se evaluó mensualmente la tasa mineralización de nitrógeno (N-min), cabono (C-min) y la actividad enzimática potencial del suelo (ureasa, proteasa e hidrólisis de la fluoresceína diacetato) entre septiembre 2003 y mayo 2005. Los resultados demuestran que los niveles de las variables de actividad biológica del suelo fueron significativamente diferentes entre las parcelas de bosque y plantación (Lambda de Wilk = 0,022; F 5, 80 = 733; P < 0,0001) y entre los meses (Lambda de Wilk = 2,01E-6; F 100,395 = 84; P < 0,0001), siendo la actividad biológica mayor en el suelo de bosque de N. obliqua que en la plantación de P. radiata. Las tasas de N-min y C-min presentaron un comportamiento estacional, con los mayores montos en los meses de primaveraverano. Sin embargo, las actividades enzimáticas no mostraron una clara variación estacional. Los mayores valores de mineralización y actividad enzimática en el bosque de N. obliqua, se deberían a la composición y características químicas de la hojarasca. Producto del cambio de uso de suelo y manejo silvícola, la plantación de P. radiata cambia la química y la relación C/N del suelo con una menor tasa de descomposición de la materia orgánica, y como consecuencia, los procesos de mineralización (C, N), la actividad biológica y retorno de nutrientes al suelo se reducen en comparación con el bosque de N. obliqua.Palabras clave: actividad biológica del suelo, bosques templados, plantaciones exóticas, suelos volcánicos. -The effects of the clear-cutting of a 70-year-old Douglas-fir plantation on the chemical composition of soil solutions and on leaching of nutrients in drainage waters were observed by a continuous monitoring, six years before and three years after the cutting. Forest harvesting was made with very limited soil disturbances. Results showed that the concentration of weakly fixed solutions did not change but that the concentration of gravitational solutions of the upper soil layers drastically fell down after the cutting. The limited increase in nutrients leached with drainage waters was only due to the increase in the water flux, which is difficult to quantify because of the presence of ground vegetation. The monitoring of numerous fluxes before and after the clear-cutting could explain the specific behaviour of the soil solutions. The limited losses of nutrients the after clear-cutting in a potentially responsive ecosystem were unexpected. The initial hypothesis was that the decrease in the mineralization and nitrification rates observed after the cutting was related to a stimulating effect of Douglas-fir on the activity of soil nitrifyers.Douglas-fir / clear-cutting / soil solutions / nutrients / leaching Résumé -Effet de la coupe à blanc d'un peuplement de Douglas (Pseudotsuga menziesii F.) sur la composition chimique des solutions du sol et sur le flux d'éléments drainés. Les effets de la coupe à blanc d'une plantation de Douglas de 70 ans ont été observés sur la composition chimique des solutions du sol et les pertes d'éléments par drainage, par un suivi mensuel pendant 6 ans avant, et 3 ans après la coupe. L'exploitation du peuplement a été réalisée avec une perturbation minimum du sol. Les résultats montrent que les solutions liées ont peu évolué après la coupe, alors que le changement des solutions libres a été drastique dans les horizons de surface du sol. Malgré des incertitudes sur le rôle de la végétation spontanée, le drainage d'éléments n'a pas fortement augmenté après la coupe. La prise en compte de l'ensemble des flux mesurés dans cette étude semble pouvoir expliquer les observations. Les pertes limitées après la coupe d'une plantation où l'activité nitrifiante était élevée avant la coupe étaient inattendues.
