Effects of fermentation products ofGanoderma lucidumon growth performance and immunocompetence in weanling pigs

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to test fermentation, for its products of a Chinese medicinal mushroom, Ganoderma lucidum, cultured by submerged fermentation for its effect on growth performance and immunocompetence in weanling piglets. In Experiment 1, 72 weanling piglets were allotted to one of four treatments receiving these fermentation products (GLF, expressed as amount of beta-glucans) at 0 (control), 50, 100, and 150 mg/kg feed for 4 weeks. The results showed that at a supplementation level of 50 mg/kg fe… Show more

“…Similarly, administration of Shiitake mushroom‐extracted lentinan and fermentation products of S. cerevisiae have been shown to have an inhibitory effect on E. coli in the small intestine of piglets (van Nevel et al ). In addition, the levels of Streptococci in the intestinal lumen, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus in the serum, and porcine circovirus in lymphoid tissues, were significantly decreased after piglets were fed Shiitake mushroom‐extracted lentinan, Cryptoporus volvatus and fermentation products of Ganoderma lucidum , respectively (van Nevel et al ; Chen et al ; Gao et al ).…”

“…Macrophages are key participants in the innate immune system's ability to respond to the invasion of pathogenic organisms. It has been observed that another medicinal fungi, Ganoderma lucidum, was able to increase macrophage chemotaxis ability in pigs (Chen et al, 2008).…”

“…A growing body of evidence indicates that Ganoderma lucidum may regulate the production of proteins and mRNA synthesis of various cytokines, including interleukin-1␤ (IL-1␤), tumor necrosis factor-␣ (TNF-␣), IL-2, and interferon-␥ (IFN-␥) both in vivo and in vitro (Gao et al, 2005;Chen et al, 2006;Ahmadi and Riazipour, 2007;Cheng et al, 2007;Chen et al, 2008). Increasing evidence has also confirmed the role of cytokines in the regulation of sleep (Kapsimalis et al, 2005;Opp, 2005).…”
