Effects of Family Psychoeducation on Expressed Emotion and Burden of Care in First-Episode Psychosis: A Prospective Observational Study

Abstract: The present study aimed to examine the levels and interactions of family burden (FB) and expressed emotion (EE) in first episode psychosis (FEP) patients and, secondly, to observe the potential change after a brief psychoeducational group intervention implemented in a real world clinical setting. Twenty-three key relatives of FEP patients received a brief psychoeducational group intervention. FB and EE were assessed before and after the intervention. “…Research indicates that brief psychoeducational interventions may not be sufficient to enhance family processes in first-episode patients (González-Blanch et al, 2010). Family interventions that include communication and problem-solving training have been associated with better family communication among individuals with schizophrenia (Doane, Goldstein, Miklowitz, & Falloon, 1986) and bipolar illness (Simoneau, Miklowitz, Richards, a Saleem, & George, 1999).…”

“…More recently Nasr and Kausar (2009) found that a family psycho-educational intervention significantly reduced caregiver's levels of burden in Pakistan. On the contrary Gonzalez-Blanch et al (2010) found no effect from a brief family intervention on either burden or EE in Spain. Tsang et al (2003) found that much of the burden associated with caring for a schizophrenic relative pertained to social stigma with its consequences resulting in social isolation.…”

“…La evaluación del taller muestra que la intervención contribuye al afrontamiento de la crisis y su principal aporte es la promoción y/o mantención de estrategias, por parte de los padres, que se correlacionan con la adhesión a tratamiento. No obstante, considerando otros estudios sobre carga familiar y emoción expresada por parte de la familia 10 , los grupos psico-educativos breves pueden no ser suficientes para afrontar la crisis asociada a la experiencia. …”
