Effects of Extraction pH on the Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry Profiles of Athabasca Oil Sands Process Water

Abstract: A comparison of the acidic and basic extracts of oil sands process water (OSPW) was performed using positive- and negative-ion electrospray ionization (ESI) and atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI), coupled with a 12 T solariX Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer (FTICR MS). In general, the acid-neutral extracts showed higher oxygen content within the negative-ion profiles (both APPI and ESI). The hydrocarbon class was readily observed in the base-neutral extract. Furthermore, a c… Show more

“…NAs consist of hundreds of different compounds, with more than one isomer for each n and Z value or compound class, making the separation and individual analysis of NA a difficult task [67]. A single mixture, for example, contains over 1,500 different NAs with a broad range of molar mass (up to 1,500 Da) [99][100][101]. Moreover, some species are detected at trace levels [88], requiring a preconcentration step prior to instrumental analysis.…”

“…Over recent years, MS-based qualitative analysis became the most efficient analytical tool for the molecular analysis of NAs. As long as the mass spectrometer exhibits sufficient resolution and accuracy to provide reliable measurements of the monoisotopic mass and its corresponding isotopic patterns, any MS-based method can practically achieve group-type separation [64,67,75,77,99]. In this context, the direct-MS analysis offers an ideal platform for highthroughput experimentation, even though the analysis of individual compositional isomers and diastereomers may be jeopardized.…”

“…The Athabasca oil sands deposits, located in the province of Alberta, Canada, are estimated to contain 1.7−2.5 trillion barrels of oil (Burrowes et al, 2009;Clemente et al, 2003). These nonconventional oil reserves require approximately 2−4 barrels of water to produce 1 barrel of crude oil (Barrow et al, 2016), generating a large volume of oil sands process-affected water (OSPW), which is expected to reach 10 9 m 3 by 2025. (Johnson et al, 2011).…”

“…Over the past decade considerable attention has been given to the development of ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry to both characterize and quantify NAFC in oil sands related samples (Barrow et al, 2016;Barrow et al, 2004;Bowman et al, 2014;Brunswick et al, 2015;Chen et al, 2015;Headley et al, 2016;Headley et al, 2015;Headley et al, 2014;Headley et al, 2013;Headley et al, 2011b;Huang et al, 2016;Jie et al, 2015;Nyakas et al, 2013;Pereira and Martin, 2015;Pereira et al, 2013;Wilde et al, 2015). Due to the complexity of NAFC mixtures, the results are dependent upon numerous variables associated with the analytical procedure.…”
