Effects of escin on acute inflammation and the immune system in mice

Abstract: Escin has been used extensively to treat chronic venous insufficiency, hemorrhoids, and edema resulting from cerebral ischemic damage, trauma or operation. However, no studies have looked at the anti-inflammatory properties of escin administered by intravenous injection, and it is still not clear whether escin has an effect on the immune system. This study seeks to investigate the time-dependent anti-inflammatory properties of escin and its effect on the immune system. The anti-inflammatory effect of escin was… Show more

“…However, our recent research showed the serum corticosterone level in mice did not increase after a 7-day intravenous injection of escin [13]. In another study, we further found escin to be a safe and potent anti-inflammatory drug with long effective anti-inflammation and without immunosuppression [14].…”

“…Whole blood was assayed in duplicate for hemoglobin concentration by spectrophotometer (GBC, Cintra 10e). Red blood count (RBC) [20] was determined with an blood cell arithmometer (ABX Micros 60, France) and blood glucose (kit from Nanjing Jiancheng Inc, Nanjing, China) was determined by the spectrophotometer (GBC, Cintra 10e) [21] .…”

“…Escin is a natural mixture of triterpene saponins, and has shown clinically significant anti-inflammatory activity postoperatively and in chronic venous insufficiency, haemorroids and traumatic brain edema. It mainly exerts its anti-inflammatory and anti-edematous effects through its anti-histamine and antiserotoninergic activities, and by reducing the adhesiveness and migration of neutrophils (6). The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of escin on the inflammation induced by LPS in primary culture of hPDLs.…”
