Effects of different essential oils on the acceptability and palatability of cereal-based baits for laboratory mice

Abstract: SUMMARYThe aim of our study was to investigate the possibility of application of essential oils as additives in cereal-based rodenticide baits, at rates which prevent mould development and are applicable in humane medicine. Also, the purpose of these oils would be to extend the utility value of baits and reduce the use of antifungal ingredients that usually affect bait acceptance. The effects of essential oils of ten different plant species, applied at rates of one and two ml per kg of plain bait, on bait accep… Show more

“…Antifungal activity of cinnamon and clover essential oils on mold has been confirmed (Ju et al, 2018). Also, laboratory tests have confirmed the attractiveness of cinnamon and clover essential oils in food to the laboratory mouse, Swiss strain (Jokić et al, 2013).…”

“…Oily substances are usually palatable to small rodents (Jokić et al 2011(Jokić et al , 2013 and can increase bait uptake (Schlötelburg et al 2018). The same is true for wheat (Jokić et al 2012;Buckle & Smith 2015) that was used as a bait base.…”

“…Based on the current knowledge of potentials of the essential oil of cinnamon, Cinnamoumi zeylanicum (Jokić et al, 2013, Jokić et al, 2018, the present study focused on determining the biological efficacy of bromadiolone and difenacoum baits supplemented with cinnamon essential oil at 0.75 % concentration under practical conditions. Improvements of the acceptability and efficacy of rodenticides in environmentally friendly manner would also be a contribution to rodent pest management control programs by finding an acceptable solution both from the aspect of environment protection and improved quality and safety of food and human health protection.…”
