Effects of different drying methods on C-phycocyanin content of Spirulina platensis powder

Abstract: Abstract:The aim of this research was to determine the effects of different drying methods on C-phycocyanin extracted from Spirulina platensis. Two different drying techniques, including freeze-drying and oven-drying, were used in this research. 27.3% phycocyanin content was determined by freeze drying. Compared with that group, by oven drying method has been observed loss of 35.4% phycocyanin. The phycocyanin purity ratio (A620 / A280) was found 1.26 and 1.16 by using freeze drying method and oven drying meth… Show more

“…However, the extra additon of these substances in 1 L culture medium brought extra cost (~$0.03) that was calculated through multipling the additional quantities of subtansces (NaCl, BS and BT) by their commerical prices. In terms of the market price of food-grade phycocyanin ($0.5 g -1 ) (Güroy et al, 2017), the extra production of phycocyanin per liter (0.13 g) valued approximately $0.07, which exceeded the input cost ($0.03). Therefore, it would be cost-effective and economically feasible for the phycocyanin production after optimizaiton.…”

“…Pan-utai & Iamtham (2019) reported varying extraction yields in Arthrospira platensis and purity values depending on the method of drying, and freezedrying is the most suitable method to maintain cell composition. In the literature, freeze-drying method is recommended to preserve the heat-sensitive content of cells without damaging the cell wall (Güroy et al 2017;Tavanandi & Raghavarao, 2019).…”
