Effects of dietary supplementation with Clostridium butyricum on the growth performance and humoral immune response in Miichthys miiuy

Abstract: The effects of dietary supplementation with Clostridium butyricum on growth performance and humoral immune response in Miichthys miiuy were evaluated. One hundred and fifty Miichthys miiuy weighing approximately 200-260 g were divided into five groups and reared in 15 tanks with closed circuiting culture system. The animals were fed 5 diets: basal diet only (control) or supplemented of the basal diet with C. butyricum at doses of 10(3) (CB1), 10(5) (CB2), 10(7) (CB3) or 10(9) (CB4) CFU/g. Compared with the con… Show more

“…Lysozyme is one of the major components in the immune defense system in both invertebrates and vertebrates (Song et al, 2006). It is known to act as a nonspecific immune mediator against parasitic, bacterial and viral infections, and in response to infection its activity is found to increase in fish blood (Puangkaew et al, 2004).…”

“…Elevation of immunoglobulin level by probiotics supplementation is reported in many animals including fish [27,58,63]. Furthermore, Song et al [75] recorded high immunoglobulin level in skin mucusa of Miichthys miiuy by Clostridium butyricum. Different Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) group of probiotics either in viable or non-viable form can elevate immunoglobulin level in fish [64] and even one week supplementation of probiotioc like Lactobacillus rhamnosus @2.8 Â 10 8 CFU/g feed was found to significantly increase the immunoglobulin level in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) [60].…”

“…The lysozyme activity of Catla sp., serum was significantly increased (p˂0.05) aŌer four weeks of feeding with different probiotic supplemented diets compared to that of the control (Das et al, 2013). In addition to serum lysozyme content probiotic can also increase the lysozyme level in the skin mucosa fish (Song et al, 2006;Taoka et al, 2006). Taoka et al (2006) reported significantly high lysozyme level in skin mucosa by supplementing commercial probiotics by water compared to oral supplementation in O. niloticus.…”
