Effects of Dietary Methionine Restriction on Cognition in Mice

Hannah Lail,
Angela M. Mabb,
Marise B. Parent
et al.

Abstract: Dietary restriction of the essential amino acid, methionine, has been shown to induce unique metabolic protection. The peripheral benefits of methionine restriction (MR) are well established and include improvements in metabolic, energy, inflammatory, and lifespan parameters in preclinical models. These benefits all occur despite MR increasing energy intake, making MR an attractive dietary intervention for the prevention or reversal of many metabolic and chronic conditions. New and emerging evidence suggests t… Show more

“…Methionine is an essential amino acid necessary for the synthesis of glutathione, an antioxidant protein, which also participates in the regulation of cell proliferation. 14 Thus, the application of the MCD model in the basic experimentation was constrained.…”

“…FGF21 treatment has shown neuroprotective effects and improved cognition in obese, insulinresistant rats (20). Despite conflicting findings on FGF21 gene expression in the hippocampus, it is crucial for MR-related cognitive improvements (21,22). Moreover, MR in aged mice also promoted memory enhancement alongside increased FGF21 levels (23).…”
