Effects of dietary astaxanthin and β carotene on gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic indices, gonad and liver composition in goldfish Carassius auratus (Linnaeus, 1758) broodstocks

Abstract: This study investigated the effects of two source carotenoids on the hepatosomatic index (HSI) and the gonadosomatic index (GSI) of the goldfish (Carassius auratus). For this experiment, six diets containing concentrations of 50, 100, and 150 mg carotenoid kg-1 of synthetic astaxanthin and β-carotene were added to a basic carp diet, while one group of fish was fed a control diet (no added carotenoids). Fiberglass tanks were used for the study, which was performed from January to April of 2013. During the breed… Show more

“…Tizkar et al () stated that at high dietary β‐carotene concentrations, unutilized vitamin A can be stored in the liver, resulting in a significant increase in the liver somatic index (LSI). However, we observed the opposing response since fish fed the supplemented diet showed a decrease in the LSI while the condition factor remained unaltered.…”

“…Furthermore, astaxanthin has a similar function to lipoic acid, which has very strong protection against cytoplasm and cell nucleus, helps vitamin C, and E does their function properly (Ni, 2015). The vitamin E and astaxanthin are absorbed by the intestine and metabolized in the liver and is further stored in the skin as well as gonads during maturation and in muscle tissue during growth (Tizkar et al, 2016).…”

“…Astaxanthin is a natural carotenoid that produces a red color commonly found in yeasts, algae, crustaceans, and predatory fish such as salmon (Tizkar et al, 2016). Although the astaxanthin does not completely convert into vitamin A, astaxanthin intake continues to increase the supply of vitamin A for the body.…”

“…According to Tizkar et al (2016), vitamin E is absorbed in the intestine and metabolized it in the liver and then stored under the skin during the growth process and in the gonad during gonad maturation process of goldfish.…”
