Effects of dietary antioxidant supplementation before and after oral acetaminophen challenge in cats

Abstract: Lymphocyte blastogenesis increased transiently in group C and D cats. After acetaminophen administration, all groups had transient increases in methemoglobin within 4 hours and mild, brief facial edema; group C had decreased glutathione concentration and increased 8-OH d-guanosine concentration versus controls; and protein carbonyl concentration increased least for group B. Plasma lipoate and dihydrolipoate concentrations peaked by week 10 for groups C and D. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-Lipoate, vitamin… Show more

“…Similar results were seen in Phyllanthus niruri administration in mice (Bhattacharjee and Sil, 2006). Lipoic acid did not act as an antioxidant but appeared to enhance oxidant effects of acetaminophen, but vitamin E plus cysteine did have protective effects (Hill et al ., 2005).…”

“…When the copper‐borne liver disease occurs, vitamin E is reduced to a very low level. Vitamin E and selenium can be used in combination to treat tetracycline‐induced liver diseases 59 . In addition, for the treatment of chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and copper‐related liver disease, vitamin E also has certain effects.…”

“…Vitamin E and selenium can be used in combination to treat tetracycline-induced liver diseases. 59 In addition, for the treatment of chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and copper-related liver disease, vitamin E also has certain effects. Vitamin C, as a reducing agent both in vitro and in vivo, plays an important role in scavenging oxygen free radicals and lipid peroxidation.…”

“…Methaemoglobinaemia in dogs and cats has been most frequently reported because of intoxication with oxidative substances, such as acetaminophen (Finco and others 1975, Harvey and others 1986, Schlesinger 1995, Allen 2003, Webb and others 2003, Hill and others 2005), topical benzocaine (Harvey and others 1979, Wilkie and Kirby 1988), onion products (Harvey and Rackear 1985) and phenazopyridine (Harvey and Kornick 1976). Congenital deficiency in methaemoglobin reductase resulting in juvenile methaemoglobinaemia has been reported in both dogs and cats (Harvey and others 1974, 1994, Fine and others 1999, Harvey 2000).…”
