At present, many high gas and outburst mines have poor gas drainage effects. An important reason influencing the gas drainage effect is a poor hole-sealing effect. Most studies on gas drainage borehole sealing focus on local and foreign borehole sealing methods, borehole sealing equipment, and borehole sealing materials. Numerical simulations of initial drilling sealing depth are insufficient because studies on this subject are few. However, when the initial sealing depth of the borehole is not chosen reasonably, air can enter the gas drainage drill hole through the circumferential crack of roadway surrounding rocks under the influence of suction pressure of the drainage system. This phenomenon ultimately affects the hole-sealing effect. To improve the drilling hole sealing of gas drainage boring, we deduced the expression formulas of the crushing zone, plastic zone, and elastic zone around the coal-seam floor stone drift and conducted a stress-strain analysis of the coal-seam floor stone drift of the 2145 working surfaces of the Sixth Coal Mine of Hebi Coal Mine Group Company by using theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and on-scene verification. Finally, we obtain the initial drilling sealing depth, which is a main contribution of this study. The results prove the following. The performed hole-sealing process with an initial drilling sealing depth of 8 m has a gas drainage efficiency of 55%. Compared with the previous 6.8 m initial drilling sealing depth with a gas drainage efficiency of less than 30%, which was adopted by the mine, the initial sealing depth of 8 m chosen in the numerical simulation is reasonable and conforms to the actual situation on the spot. Therefore, the initial drilling sealing depth chosen in the numerical simulation will produce practical and effective guidance to study the field hole-sealing depth.

Due to the impossibility of obtaining intact standard experimental samples, it is difficult to test the mechanical properties of soft and broken coal and rock obtained from deep coal mines. So, an advanced experimental technology based on a small sample volume, nanoindentation technology, was introduced and used to measure the mechanical parameters of them. By using the averaging method, the hardness of shale, mudstone and coal are 1191.90 MPa, 674.95 MPa and 424.30 MPa, respectively; their elastic moduli are 20.39 GPa, 11.72 GPa and 5.47 GPa; and their fracture toughness were 1.66 MPa·m0.5, 1.28 MPa·m0.5 and 0.77 MPa·m0.5. These three mechanical parameters were used to quantify and map the heterogeneous properties of coal and rock for convenience and accuracy. For example, the inter quartile range (IQR) of the hardness of shale, mudstone, and coal are 1502.10 MPa, 1016.20 MPa and 54.64 MPa, respectively, meaning that coal has the best homogeneity among them. Nanoindentation technology provides researchers with a convenient method to conduct mechanical experiments at the microscale.

A series of multistage creep tests under different confining pressures with acoustic emission monitoring have been performed to investigate the deformation characteristic and failure process of cracked granite during creep. The critical axial strain of cracked sample showed an increasing tendency with the increase of confining pressure. In contrast, critical lateral strain experienced a process of descending first at low confinement and then remaining nearly constant at high confinement. Compared with loading-cracked specimen, smaller critical axial strain, greater critical lateral strain, and higher lateral creep strain rate were found for unloading-cracked specimen. Based on the spatial and temporal distribution of acoustic emission events, the cracking process during creep was analysed. The AE events with high energy are mainly concentrated at the final fracture area of the specimen. The higher the confining pressure, the more the AE events with low energy. Compared with the loading-cracked specimen, the percentage of AE events with high energy is relatively small for the unloading-cracked specimen.
