Effects of Cyhalothrin-Based Pesticide on Early Life Stages of Common Carp (Cyprinus carpioL.)

Abstract: The effects of Nexide (a.i. gamma-cyhalothrin 60 g L−1) on cumulative mortality, growth indices, and ontogenetic development of embryos and larvae of common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) were studied. Levels of oxidative stress parameters glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), and lipid peroxidation were determined. Eggs of newly fertilised common carp were exposed to Nexide at concentrations 5, 25, 50, 100, and 250 μg L−1 (0.3, 1.5, 3, 6, and 15 … Show more

“…Degeneration of hepatocytes has been described after exposure of bifenthrin and cyhalothrin (Velisek et al 2009a;Velisek et al 2009b;Richterova et al 2014), and damage of gill lamellae was de- scribed (Velisek et al 2006;Velisek et al 2009a). The concentration of 3.14 µg/l cypermethrin in the form of Alimethrine 10 EM was found to be associated with fatty degeneration of liver and severe teleangioectasiae of gills in juvenile rainbow trout (O. mykiss) (Velisek et al 2006).…”

“…Lambda-cyhalothrin (LCT) is a new breed of type II pyrethroid insecticide. It is preferred over other insecticides owing to its superb potencies, greater photo-stability, and potential toxicity to a wide variety of insect pests [ 6 , 7 ]. LCT has very low water solubility and fat solubility, and is extensively used to control agricultural and domestic pests [ 8 ].…”

“…The damage observed into the gill surface obtained from histopathological studies suggest the accumulation of insecticide in gills, which may associated with decrease oxygen intake efficiency by gill and due to increase secretion of mucus irritation is developed with increase ventilation volume [14]. The toxic effect causes by pyrethroids includes impaired schooling behaviors, inappropriate swimming (try to adhere the water surface), buoyancy loss, seizures, hyperactivity, rate of cough is increased, elevated mucus secretions in gill, gill arches get flared, and before death shaking of head and listlessness is also observed [15].…”
