The Antioxidant Role of a Taurine-Enriched Diet in Combating the Immunotoxic and Inflammatory Effects of Pyrethroids and/or Carbamates in Oreochromis niloticus

Abstract: Indiscriminate use of insecticides is a major concern due to its ubiquitous occurrence and potential toxicity to aquatic animals. This study investigated the adverse effects of lambda-cyhalothrin (LCT; C23H19ClF3NO3) and methomyl (MTM; C5H10N2O2S) on immune system modulations and growth performance of juvenile fishes. The supportive role of a taurine (TUR; C2H7NO3S)-supplemented diet was also evaluated. Juvenile O. niloticus fishes were exposed to LCT (0.079 µg/L), MTM (20.39 µg/L), or both in water and were f… Show more

“…Furthermore, our study demonstrated that co-administration of taurine and COQ-10 with CPZ significantly reduced the impacts of CPZ on markers of oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation. These findings interestingly support the antioxidant functions of taurine and COQ-10, notably supported by previous studies related to neurotoxic and hematoxic experiments [1] , [24] , [42] , [54] , [65] , [70] .…”

“…e plants eaten by the fish helped to revamp their immune systems, which induced a higher production and more healthy status [13][14][15]. Recent papers demonstrated that taurine [16] and parsley (Petroselinum crispum) seed meal alleviated METadverse impacts on tilapia growth [17]. Our previous studies showed that dietary resveratrol supplementation alleviated hepatic impairment through inflammatory response prevention [12] and intestinal health enhancement [18].…”

“…For example, taurine supplementation improved lysozyme and/or ACH50 activities in yellowfin sea bream, Acanthopagrus latus [44], European seabass [45], and yellow catfish [46]. Moreover, taurine administration has been found to mitigate declines in 7 Aquaculture Nutrition lysozyme and ACH50 activities in fish exposed to toxic substances [39][40][41]. Similarly, dietary methionine administration significantly increased lysozyme and ACH50 activity in European sea bass [6], Jian carp [7], and ruho carp [8].…”

“…Dietary taurine supplementation has shown mixed effects on blood leukocyte count in beluga, Huso huso, depending on supplemental levels and water salinity [38]. Taurine has produced no significant effects on blood leukocyte count in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, but mitigated leukemia after exposure to toxic substances [39]. Similar results have been observed when crucian carp, Carassius auratus, is intoxicated with ammonium acetate [40]; however, taurine has mitigated leukocytosis in yellow catfish, Pelteobagrus fulvidraco, intoxicated with ammonium acetate [41].…”
