Effects of Core on Dynamic Responses of Earth Dam

Abstract: This paper investigates the dynamic response of the Pao-Shan II Dam subjected to the Chi-Chi earthquake (M L =7.3) in Taiwan by using FLAC 3D. The elastic modulus of the dam is considered to vary with mean stress in this study. Staged construction, seepage, static equilibrium and dynamic response are sequentially analyzed. Fourier power spectra are analyzed as the earth dams subjected to a sweep frequency dynamic loading. Influences of core dimensions on the dynamic responses of the earth dam are investigated.… Show more

“…In other research, the effect of a core on dynamic responses of the earth dam have been studied (Tsai, 2009). As a result, the initial natural frequency was close to 2.5 Hz for 3D analysis while the length-height ratio (g) was more than 4 so this influence could be neglected.…”

“…This research introduced two methods such ratio of the Fourier amplitude response spectrum (RFRS) and ratio of response spectrum (RRS) to compute the fundamental frequencies during a short earthquake, and results were similar in both methods. In other research, effect of core on dynamic responses of the earthen dam was studied (Tsai, Hsu, & Lai, 2009). Accordingly, the initial natural frequency was close to 2.5 Hz for 3D analysis while the length-height ratio (η) was more than four, so this influence can be neglected.…”

“…Tsai et al [10] studied the effect of clay core dimensions on the earth dam natural frequency. Using finite element software, they showed that as the width of core increases, the first mode frequency decreases.…”
