Water and nitrogen (N) are important factors that affect crop yield. The objective of this study was to explore the interactive effect of water and nitrogen on biomass production, yield and growth responses, water and nitrogen use efficiency of winter-grown spinach. A field experiment was grown with treatments of varying water (W) and nitrogen (N) levels near Shanghai, China. Leaf area, shoot biomass and height of spinach increased with the application of N in the well-watered treatment. The highest chlorophyll content was found in spinach treated with N 2 (170 kg ha(1 nitrogen). A response surface analysis was done on plant height, leaf number, leaf weight, and plant yield of each spinach plant at different water and nitrogen levels. The equation for each of the response surfaces was taken and solved for the mathematical optimum of the curves. Abundant water supply resulted in the highest spinach yield. Yield of spinach increased with N application rates but decreased when the N was excessive. Compared with the low water treatment (W 3 ), a higher N leaching ratio was observed in the high water treatment (W 1 ), regardless of N treatment. With the increase of N application, N use efficiency of spinach significantly decreased, while water use efficiency of spinach increased. In conclusion, water levels between 36.15 cm and 42 cm, and nitrogen applications between 86 and 152.74 kg ha(1 could be recommended as the optimal treatment for spinach growth.

Safe production of leafy vegetables is more important than other horticultural crops due to their significant contribution in health promotion of consumers. In present study, the growth and nutritional quality of sweet basil plants (Ocimum basilicum L.) were evaluated under some organic compared to chemical NPK fertilizing treatments. A non cultivated soil was used in the experiment, and treatments were arranged in completely randomized design with four replications. Manure in 20 and 40% of pot volume, vermicompost in 20 and 40% of pot volume, biophosphate, NPK fertilizer and a no fertilizing control were applied to plants. The results showed that plant growth and biochemical characteristics were differently affected by organic and chemical fertilization treatments. Vermicompost particularly in 20% of pot volume resulted in highest growth and quality parameters, while the lowest values recorded in 40% manure treatment. The leaf content of ascorbic acid, essential oil, protein and minerals (P, K, Mn, Cu) were highest in 20% vermicompost, whereas leaf content of Mg, Fe and Zn was highest in 40% vermicompost treatment. Leaf nitrate content was significantly reduced in all organic treatments than NPK fertilization. Biophosphate also improved the yield and quality traits compared to unfertilized plants, while manure in both quantities reduced most of the traits (leaf vitamin C, oil yield and protein content) except the content of phenols. This indicates that processing as vermicompost can be a better way of manure application for basil production.

Cauliflower (Brassica oleracea L. var. botrytis L.) is as an important ingredient in many healthy diets worldwide, but there is a lack of scientific knowledge about fertilizer management during cauliflower production. We conducted field experiments in Yuzhong, China, in 2015 and 2016 to determine the effects of the integrated use of biofertilizer and a reduced rate of mineral fertilizers on cauliflower growth, quality, and yield and on soil characteristics. Three different rates of mineral fertilizer (60, 80, and 100% of the mineral fertilizers; 100% rate = 400 N kg ha −1 , 225 kg P 2 O 5 ha −1 , 125 kg K 2 O ha −1 ) and 500 kg ha −1 biofertilizer were applied to the crop with three replicates. The results showed that the use of the mineral fertilizer at 80% in combination with biofertilizer (80% BF) increased the vitamin C content of cauliflower heads by 39.5% in 2015 and 43.6% in 2016 compared with the 100% mineral fertilization treatment (100% MF). The 80% BF treatment decreased the nitrate content by 27.1% in 2015 and 27.6% in 2016 and improved the soluble sugar contents by 19.1% in 2015 and 29.5% in 2016 compared with the 100% MF treatment. However, the effect of the 80% BF treatment on marketable yield was found to be nonsignificant. Biofertilization also improved the soil organic matter, available N, P, and K, and enzyme activities. We observed that conjugative use of biofertilizer and a reduction in mineral N-P-K fertilizer can be used successfully in cauliflower production without compromising marketable yields.
