Effects of Contour Proximity and Lightness on Delboeuf Illusions Created by Circumscribed Letters

Abstract: 32 observers judged the size of a letter, either an "A" or an "S," which was surrounded by a circle. Both letters were overestimated, but larger surrounding circles reduced the illusion. Decreasing the lightness contrast of the surrounding circle relative to the central letter diminished the illusion. The results suggest that, like the Delboeuf illusion, these circumscribed letters illusions are produced by interactions among size-coding neurons.

“…As the magnitude of the Delboeuf illusion also varies with changes in the contrast between the figural elements and their backgrounds (Jaeger & Lorden, 1980), some interdependence between the two effects is possible. The illusory lightness enhancement gives support to lower level (structural) mechanisms (Coren, 1999), relying on sensory processes (Jaeger & Long, 2007), being at the root of the classical Delboeuf effect.…”

“…Besides the Van Ittersum study that tested the Delboeuf illusion with respect to plate size and plate coloring and serving behavior (17), and a study that tested the illusion on irregular objects (20), almost all past research on the Delboeuf illusion has been applied to circles and squares. This study extends this prior research on plate size by testing the application of the Delboeuf illusion to images of food and plate design characteristics.…”

“…The Delboeuf illusion demonstrates that a circle appears larger when surrounded by a slightly larger circle, but smaller when surrounded by a much larger circle (19) (Figure 1). The proximity and the color contrast of the concentric circles affect the illusion (20-23). Research suggests that when the space between concentric circles is small (right image of Figure 1), the circles appear to be one whole object (24).…”

“…Studies have also shown a contrast effect for larger ratios (after a transition at a ratio of about 4:1). When the larger circle is large enough compared to the inner circle, the effect shifts to contrast and the inner circle appears to be smaller than a standard circle of the same size (Goto et al, ; Jaeger & Long, ). Except for the size ratio of the concentric circles, other factors may influence the strength of the Delboeuf illusion.…”
