Die Eignung von Wärmeträgern für Wärmerohre läßt sich anhand von Kenngrößen beurteilen, welche eine Reihe von Stoffeigenschaften zusammenfassen. So kann aus der bekannten Wärmerohr‐Grundgleichung eine Kenngröße für das axiale Wärmetransportvermögen abgeleitet werden. Die Transportgrenze durch Wechselwirkung zwischen Dampf‐ und Flüssigkeitsströmung und die Grenzleistung durch Erreichen der Schallgeschwindigkeit werden ebenfalls durch derartige Kenngrößen beschrieben. Die Bedeutung der Blasenbildung in Wärmerohren wird besprochen. Für hohe Temperaturen können Alkali‐ oder Erdalkalimetalle sowie Wismut, Blei, Thalliun oder Silber verwendet werden. Für niedrige Temperaturen sind Wasser, Freone und besonders Ammoniak gut geeignet.
